Toyota overtakes VW to become no.1 carmaker in 2020

Electric cars constituted 23% of the Toyota's total sales in 2020.

Toyota has reclaimed the top spot as the world's no.1 carmaker for the year 2020. The Japanese carmaker beat Volkswagen in terms of total vehicles sales for the first time in 5 years.

The Covid-19 pandemic did take its toll on vehicle sales last year. Toyota registered a slump of 11.3% to 9.528 million units. At Volkswagen, sales dropped by 15.2% to 9.305 million units.

The ratio of electric cars sold by Toyota last year grew by 3%. Electric cars constituted 23% of the brand's total sales in 2020.

While every carmaker in the world has had to deal with the effects of the pandemic, reports suggest that Toyota fared comparatively better as Asia and its home market of Japan were less affected by the outbreak compared to Europe and North America.
