Vehicle retail sales down by 16% in December 2021

Passenger vehicle sales dropped by 10.91% compared to the previous year.

According to the data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), vehicle retail sales were down by 16.05% in December 2021, compared to the same month last year.

Overall sales for the month of December 2021 stood at 15,58,756 units, compared to 18,56,869 units in December 2020. However, compared to December 2019, when 16,63,580 units were sold, total vehicle retails have fallen by 6.30%.

The month of December is usually seen as a high sales month because of the attractive discounts that are on offer. However, it was not the case this time around. The semiconductor shortage continued to play spoilsport in the passenger vehicle segment, while 2-wheeler sales were affected by the high cost of ownership.

Tractor sales dropped by 10.32% from 69,415 units in December 2020 to 62,250 units.

Two-wheeler sales were down 19.86% to 11,48,732 units from 14,33,334 units in December 2020.

Three-wheeler sales were up by 59.50% in December 2021. 44,228 units were sold compared to 27,766 units in December 2020.

Passenger vehicle sales dropped by 10.91% compared to the previous year. 2,44,639 units were sold last month compared to 2,74,605 units in December 2020.

Commercial vehicle sales increased by 13.72%. 58,847 units were sold in December 2021 compared to 51,749 units in the previous year.
