Volkswagen has announced that it will be bringing Artificial Intelligence chatbot ChatGPT to its car's infotainment systems.
The carmaker announced the same at the ongoing Consumer Electronics Show (CES). As per the announcement, the new feature will come as standard on the latest generation of Volkswagen's infotainment system on models like the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID.7 as well as on the new Tiguan, Passat and the refreshed Golf. The feature is set to debut across the mentioned models sometime starting in the second-quarter of 2024.
Reports state that the chatbot will be integrated with Volkswagen's IDA voice assistant. The German carmaker though has confirmed that the chatbot will not gain access to vehicle data and that the questions and answers are immediately deleted to ensure data protection. Volkswagen also claimed that they are the first volume manufacturer to integrate the automotive-grade version of ChatGPT.
Stefan Ortmanns, CEO, Cerence, stated, "We are proud to build on our automotive expertise and our long-standing partnership with Volkswagen to offer its customers new innovations that leverage generative AI and large language models—even after they have purchased a vehicle." He further added, "With Cerence Chat Pro, VW is empowered with an automotive-grade ChatGPT integration that offers unmatched flexibility, customization, and ease of deployment, while prioritizing security and usability for drivers. As we look to the future, together Volkswagen and Cerence will explore collaboration to design a new, large language model (LLM)-based user experience as the basis of Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant."
