The Volkswagen Group plans to build its 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine in India. Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier has told the media that the 3-cylinder turbocharged unit will be localised, while the 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine will be discontinued once BS-VI emission norms come into force in April 2020.
The 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine is offered on the new Polo, Skoda Fabia and Karoq in the European market. It comes in 2 states of tune - 94 BHP / 175 Nm and 113 BHP / 175 Nm. VW is yet to confirm which of these will be offered in India. That said, the current 1.6-litre, 4-cylinder petrol and 1.2-litre TSI units will be discontinued.
As a result, both VW and Skoda small cars will only be offered with a petrol engine. Larger vehicles like the Octavia, Superb, Kodiaq, Passat and Tiguan will continue to use the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder diesel engine.
This comes as Skoda takes lead for the development of new India-specific models for both brands as part of the 'India 2.0' project. Models based on the MQB A0-IN platform are expected to start rolling out from 2020.
