Volvo compact modular architecture (CMA) revealed

On the upper end of the spectrum, Volvo has started the expansion of its premium car portfolio with models based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). The process started with the launch of the new XC90 and will continue with the launch of the new S90 premium sedan (set to replace the S80). Volvo will now expand its compact car range with vehicles based on the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which has been described as a smaller version of the SPA.

The company’s first CMA based car is expected to be launched in 2017, which means that future Volvo cars will be built on two fully scalable and modular vehicle architectures. The CMA and SPA platforms will see a lot of technology sharing, including the powertrains (both conventional and new plug-in hybrid variants), the infotainment setup, climate and data network and safety systems. The platform will spawn a new twin engine plug-in hybrid variant designed especially for the new architecture.

CMA will help Volvo speed up the development of new products, with parts and technology sharing permitting significant economies of scale. Volvo’s product renewal and growth strategy involves the replacement of every single car in its line-up in the next four years.
