My WagonR AGS at 4400 kms: Service, fuel efficiency & other updates

The AGS though very convenient, doesn't have the gears tuned to my liking for city drives.

BHPian GTN recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hi folks! I have christened my Wagon 'Gandalf The Grey'.

Gandalf/Gandy has completed 4400 kms as of today. Here's few updates.

Accessories:

Mud flaps, Body side mouldings, Art Leather Seats, Leather wrap for steering wheel, Rubber mats, Sun screens and Blind spot mirrors.

Total Cost ~ 25k

I can't find the invoices for each individual item but that is about the total amount I spent.

1st Free service @ Varun Motors, Hyderabad:

Nothing to write home about. Went during a busy day and it took 5 hours for them to do the servicing. And the car looked dirtier than when I left it. ( It had rained for a while and the car had accumulated lot of dust in the yard by the time I collected it.) I was charged Rs.207 for the service.

2nd Free service @ Varun Motors, Hyderabad:

Much better experience. The car was shiny and clean when I collected it. Gandalf threw some warning lights related to AGS between the services. I had it scanned and they said there was no issue at present and cleared the codes.

I must mention that the battery mounting was loose fitting right from the Factory and it eventually came loose. I had to get it tightened. It might have caused some of the issues I faced during that time. I have not faced any issues since.

Charged Rs.207 for the service.

I also bought (The agent convinced me to buy ) their Customer Convenience package for Rs.1062, which supposedly covers engine damage due to negligence and water damage etc.

1st long drive/trip:

I took Gandalf to my hometown and back earlier this month. It was 1460 km total, out of which around 900 km was pure two lane highway. Rest is a combination of rural, town and single lane roads.

I drove between 60 and 100 kmph on the highway, probably averaging 80. Rest of the trip it was between 40-80 kmph, averaging 60. I got a combined mileage of 21+ kmpl for the total trip.

Purely on highway, I got 22+kmpl. Wasn't expecting this kind of mileage, as the engine oil hasn't been changed yet and the mileage I get in the city is between 12 and 14kmpl depending on the traffic conditions I drive.

Was pleasantly surprised and extremely satisfied. The 1.2 L KN engine seems to be tuned for mileage in Wagon R. Not sure if the same engine gives similar mileage in the Swift/Dzire.

The car was very easy to drive on highways (Needs a firm grip on the steering wheel though) and local roads. Didn't face any issue with ground clearance or pickup. Engine easily cruises between 80-100 kmph.  Didn't push beyond that.

I did hit some deep cracks on the highway which sent some bone jarring thuds. I hope it doesn't mess up the suspension. Gandalf got quite a few scrapes, scratches etc., during the trip, on account of narrow roads, intruding tree branches. Wish I had the reverse camera installed. Didn't feel the need for it in the city but it would have come in handy in the narrow lanes, while reversing.

Overall, I am very happy with my purchase as it covers all the bases for me. The 1.2 L with AGS is a breeze to drive in the city and handles the highways quite well. Acres of interior space and humongous boot (I was able to fit one large and two medium sized luggage suitcases in the boot, stacked on top of each other with space left on the side for cabin bag and few more items. The same were a tight squeeze in the previous gen Creta).

I did think of upgrading the rubber to 175/185 section but decided against it as the wheels are already at the extreme edges and I think any wider tyres would slightly protrude to the sides and probably affect the handling. I am using pure nitrogen air now and it has improved the ride by 20%.

Only negative points I can think of are:

  • Headlights: Not good for night driving at all. Purely for city driving/in well lit roads.
  • Steering wheel: 'Dead' is the right word. Very little feedback from the road. It does weigh up at highway speeds but that's about it.
  • Entertainment unit: Less said the better. Similar to stuff offered a decade back in decent cars. Only 2 speakers as well.
  • AGS Unit/Gearing: The AGS though very convenient, doesn't have the gears tuned to my liking for city drives. The 2nd gear doesn't slot in until like 20 kmph, 3rd until 30 kmph. 4th and 5th are fine. I find myself in 1st and 2nd gears more than I would like to. I would have been in 3rd gear in the same traffic conditions if I were driving manual. That is my main gripe with the car. I would get better mileage as well, driving manual in the city.

Transmission issue on my 2018 Maruti Dzire: AGS stuck in 2nd gear

They suggested a complete AMT assembly change but ended up changing only the AMT assembly child kit.

Thanks to Faheem Mohammed for sharing the information. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing it with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP share page!

I have been driving a 2018 Maruti Suzuki Dzire VDI AMT. Recently I have faced a vague issue, which I wanted to share with you. People who are going for the AMT version these days should be aware of these issues and choose their vehicles accordingly.

I have paid ~ Rs. 70,000 - Rs. 1 lakh extra for the AGS version and within 55,000 kilometres there are issues. I am sharing with you a video of my car’s recent breakdown. I was driving at 60 - 80 km/h and suddenly the gear was stuck in 2nd gear.

This incident happened on a busy highway (NH-65) and thankfully no accident happened.

You might imagine how hard it is to explain this - you are driving a vehicle at some speed and suddenly it stops in second gear in the middle of the road.

I tried reaching out to Maruti Suzuki Road Side Assistance for help, but they were not reachable. Once the call got connected, but without knowing my problem, they simply disconnected the call.

However, I took the help of a private towing van and shifted the vehicle to the Maruti Suzuki service centre. They took around 4 days to figure out the issue. They observed that the clutch wire got cut for no reason and suggested a complete AMT assembly change (~ Rs 70,000 – 80,000). As my vehicle was under warranty, I refused to pay the expenses. They tried to deny my request saying that vehicle had not been serviced at our workshop. I argued that during the lockdown, when the whole world was struggling for survival, how could they expect me to have my vehicle serviced at their workshop?

After a long discussion, they took another day and just changed the AMT assembly child kit which costs Rs. 5,000 only. The child kit installation and calibration were not done properly and the vehicle is giving jerks now.

I want this to be reported on your platform so that more people are aware of these issues.

Maruti S-Presso AGS: Ownership update after 6 months & 2400 kms

The glue quality or the fitting standard of MGA molding is horribly sub standard and has started to peel off in mine.

BHPian Nanolover recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Maruti S-Presso ownership update @ 2400 kms and 6 months:

Services done: 1st and 2nd service ( 350 bucks each for some sanitization and windshield wash pouches). Picked up and dropped off at home free of charge as service center is nearby.

Overall mileage in 100% inner city use with AC on: 13.2 km/l

Upgrades and the corresponding pics below:

Upgraded MRF ZLX 185/6 R14 from delivery day itself. Soft ride and steering effort also remains the same:

Frameless wipers ( highly recommended). the Standard ones start the screeching noise in 1 month:

Added MGA side door and wheel arch moldings to prevent untoward scratches and my dad goes ahead and scratches another place! ( backed up close to a no parking board and ended up kissing it). Talk about luck. Kept it as it is for now, since this is daily runner and no time now to keep it in paint shop. Also better to have a small scratch to remind us:

Interior upgrades:

Retrimmed and rebolstered the seats with added side support and thigh support, plus diamond stitch pattern. The seats are significantly more comfortable now, only draw back is people of wider proportions end up sitting on the seat bolsters than IN the seat itself ( this is a problem for the front seats). Rear is ok. but since this is mostly for my father and average height folks in my family, it is ok. Total damage -18,000 bucks and 2 days downtime for getting these stitched.

You can also see the horn change over switch, blank Minda switches I have added and also the elegant cord floor mats ( these are a perfect fit and tailored for each model by the company):

Rear seats and floor mats:

Cockpit view: Steering wheel stitched in art leather and now just the right thickness to hold, reverse sensor display on left side A pillar, added an air purifier which I had brought from Japan - the white one, day/night mirror from Boodmo and upgraded cabin lamp to LED):

Trunk with MGA 3D mat:

Added rear stop and indicator combo LEDs (I know, I ditched the reflectors, but this car will be city bound only with no remote chance of highway duty).

Also visible is the upgraded 4 sensor reverse parking sensor system (Maruti one is only 2 and dad wanted an upgraded 4 sensor one):

A word of caution. The glue quality or the fitting standard of MGA molding is horribly sub standard and has started to peel off in mine. Will need to take it to my accessory shop and get it redone with proper glue. Also the alignment of these panels in the front and rear door is not right and the workmanship is very shoddy. Maruti has the guts to charge Rs. 8000 + for these pieces of plastic and the very basic they can ensure is to get their service center folks to do a proper job of fixing this:

Purchase & delivery experience: 2022 Maruti WagonR AGS

The Wagon felt a lot more spacious and the boot was definitely much bigger. Secondly, the WagonR got an engine upgrade in March.

BHPian GTN recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Hello BHPians,

This is my first post in the forum. And its about my New Wagon R Zxi 2022 1.2 ISS AGS. I have been following Team BHP for more than a decade and am now a member.

My previous ride was a 2004 Fiat Palio 1.2 and it had been rusting for the past three years in the basement. It cost me a lot in major repairs to clutch, gear box and miscellaneous electrical stuff before it started to die on me while driving in traffic. So, I parked it 3 years back and haven't used it since.

I needed a replacement and as per the BHP recommendation, I started looking for used cars. I live in Hyderabad and I couldn't find any decent cars for less than 4 lakhs and most were like more than 8 years old. It did not make sense going for a used car given the issues with odometer tampering and age related issues. I had to give up my pre-worshipped car dream and start looking at new cars. I am 43 now and though my heart still longs for a manual, my knees have been complaining for past few years and so, I decided to go for an automatic. I actually didn't consider too many cars before settling on the WagonR. Only other option I considered was the Ignis.

Couple of things led me to finalize the Wagon. First, the space. The Wagon felt a lot more spacious and the boot was definitely much bigger. Secondly, the WagonR got an engine upgrade in March. It now comes with the new 1.2 KN engine with Idle Start Stop (ISS) and Hill Hold Assist. The Ignis did not receive this upgrade and the Nexa folks were not even sure it would in near future. Also it would have cost a little more than the Wagon.

So, WagonR it was and I didn't spend much time shopping around for offers from different dealers either, as there weren't any (offers) on the Wagon R AGS model. I settled with Varun Motors which was the nearest Arena dealership. Did 3 test drives and was satisfied with the engine and AGS performance. Booked by paying Rs.1000 advance. Next day the sales guy called and said he can assign a Magma Grey Wagon R from the next shipment if I paid 20k advance. So I did. And in 2 weeks, I was collecting the New Grey Wagon R on a very hot evening after a 3 hour wait to clear up some issue with invoice and paperwork. The delivery experience was just about ok. After waiting for 3 hours in their showroom without proper air conditioning, I was glad to leave after the customary coconut breaking and taking a few pictures. I didn't even get the TR right away as there was an issue with their server and left without the TR number. They sent me the TR copy later in the evening. Accessories I purchased are 1. The car cover 2. Fog lamps. Cost me ~ 5k. The only things I received in the name of freebies were the ribbon and balloons tied to the car and a box of chocolates.

I drove straight to the nearest (HP) petrol pump and filled up the tank. It took 30.4 litres to the auto cutoff. And I just drove home. Still haven't done the puja as I am waiting to do it on day of Ugadi festival.

I wanted to post after running the car for a few hundred km but couldn't wait  I will post updates as I run the car in and do some long drives.

Delivery and first impressions: Maruti Suzuki S-Presso AGS

Overall, a nice car to drive and really a boon in a crowded city like Chandigarh due to shortage of parking.

BHPian sanman18 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Finally got my S-Presso AGS VXI+ on Wednesday . I had booked the same on 12th Jan-22. Got some accessories installed like side cladding , boot chrome garnish , wheel cladding , window rain visor and reverse camera (Though it is very costly, Rs. 5,000/- at dealer). But had to go for it to avoid warranty issues. Did not take floor mats as I plan to buy 7D mats from the local shop. No seat covers as wife likes the original seat fabric. Also I believe that the original seat can be used for at least 2-3 years.

Got the extended warranty too. Found the car very easy to drive. But mainly, I bought it for my better half, as she has just learnt to drive and is uncomfortable driving my car (Dzire).

However, I noticed some cons like :

  • The doors don't close properly with a gentle push . Need to be closed with force.
  • The doors are not unlocked when I switch off the ignition. One needs to take out the key from the ignition to do it. Found it little inconvenient when going for some quick shopping when someone is sitting at the passenger door and you have to put some item on the back seat.
  • Engine noise feels too much inside the cabin.

Overall, a nice car to drive and really a boon in a crowded city like Chandigarh due to shortage of parking.

Some advice needed from BHPians:

  • There is no sound when I lock or unlock the car with remote (chirp sound). Can we fit a buzzer from the aftermarket as it a given indication without looking at the car that its locked or not.
  • Only two speakers are given. Is wiring available at rear doors to fit the additional speakers?

Here are some pics of the car:
