Rumour: Hyundai evaluating stripped-down Santro version

According to a media report, Hyundai could be evaluating a stripped down version of the Santro. The new version could be aimed at first-time buyers and positioned as a replacement for the Eon.

The second generation Santro was launched in October 2018. It is available in five variants with prices starting at Rs. 3.90 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). In terms of pricing, it is positioned above the Eon, which has now been discontinued.

While more buyers appear to be willing to spend more for comfort and features, Hyundai believes there is demand for an entry-level hatchback. But, developing a new model in this segment that also complies with upcoming crash safety norms would not be cost effective. Therefore, a stripped-down version of Santro could be pitted against the Maruti Alto in a lower price bracket.

Rumour: Tata considering entry-level hatchback below Tiago

According to a media report, Tata Motors is eyeing the entry-level hatchback segment and could develop a new model positioned below the Tiago. The carmaker aims to tap into this high volume segment to increase its overall market share.

Ever since the Nano and Indica were discontinued, Tata hasn't had a presence in the lower end of the hatchback market. But this could change in the future with the introduction of the modular ALFA platform, which can support cars between 3.6 to 4 meters in length. The first model based on this platform will be the Altroz. The H2X micro-SUV could be based on the same architecture, while the next generation Tiago and Tigor are also expected to switch to the new platform.

The ALFA-based cars are expected to be built at the Sanand factory. However, the Altroz is likely to be manufactured in Pune. According to Tata Motors, the demand for electric vehicles is also likely to shoot up.

The entry-level hatchback segment is currently dominated by Maruti Suzuki with the Alto. Hyundai has recently entered the fray with the new Santro, while Renault and Datsun have the Kwid and redi-GO respectively.

Scoop! Maruti Future-S based micro-SUV spotted (new Alto)

Thanks to BHPian phamilyman for sending these images in. Heartfelt gratitude for sharing them with other enthusiasts via this Team-BHP page

Maruti Suzuki's upcoming micro-SUV has been caught testing in Gurgaon. The car, which is likely to be based on the Concept Future-S is rumoured to replace the Alto.

The spy images suggest that the micro-SUV is likely to borrow styling cues from the Concept Future-S. It appears to have a high stance with wraparound headlamps and rectangular tail lamp clusters. The car has short front and rear overhangs and a raked rear windshield. The new model is likely to be based on the WagonR's Heartect-A platform.

Given its positioning in the market, the new micro-SUV could be offered with a 1.0-litre petrol engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and an optional AMT. It is expected to get all the mandatory safety features such as ABS, driver side airbag, rear parking sensors, seatbelt reminder and an audible high-speed warning as standard.

Maruti Suzuki's Concept Future-S based car is expected to compete with the Renault Kwid in the Indian market.

Rumour: Next-gen Maruti Alto spied

The first spy image of the next generation Maruti Alto has surfaced online. It appears that the new model could feature a micro-SUV body style introduced by the Renault Kwid.

The spy image suggest that the new Alto could borrow styling cues from the Future-S Concept that was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. The car seems to have a high roofline with a raked rear windshield, indicating a micro-SUV style exterior. The test mule has dummy tail lights and narrow tyres.

The next generation Alto is expected to be based on the HEARTECT platform, which also underpins the new Swift and WagonR. It would comply with the upcoming safety regulations and is therefore likely to be offered with safety features like driver side airbag, ABS, rear parking sensors, seat belt reminder and high-speed warning as standard.

While there is no information about the engines that will be offered on the new Alto, it might get BS-VI compliant 800cc and 1.0-litre petrol engine options.
