Next-gen VW Vento to arrive before new Skoda Rapid

The new Vento will be based on the MQB A0 IN platform and could be powered by a 1.0L turbo-petrol engine.

Both the Volkswagen Vento and Skoda Rapid are long due for an update. Now, according to a media report, the next generation Vento will arrive in India before its sister car.

The new Vento will be based on the MQB A0 IN platform. Under the skin, both the Vento and Rapid will have the same underpinnings. The cars are also expected to share the same 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that is currently on offer. The 3-cylinder engine puts out 109 BHP and 175 Nm and is mated to either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox. The report states that the Vento replacement will get the same transmission options.

The next generation Vento and Rapid are part of the VW Group's India 2.0 project. Besides the sedans, the company is also gearing up to foray into the crossover segment with the Skoda Vision IN and VW Taigun.

Both crossovers will be based on the heavily localized MQB A0 IN platform and are expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre, turbo-petrol engine. The engine could be paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Images of VW Polo-based sedan leaked

The first images of the upcoming VW Polo-based sedan have leaked. It is rumoured to be called Volkswagen Virtus and will be based on VW's MQB A0 platform.

The Virtus is expected to be the first among a host of other models based on the latest MQB A0 platform. The current-gen Polo and the Vento sedan in India are based on the old PQ25 platform, which is said to be up for a replacement soon. Both the models will eventually be based on the latest platform.

The spy images reveal styling that it is similar to some of the latest VW sedans. The front looks like an evolution of the Polo with slightly tweaked headlamps, a new grille and a front bumper with large sized vents. Its profile is quite similar to the Vento with a single feature line and a simple window design. That said, the new taillights, a subtle lip spoiler and chrome garnish around the bumper give a new look to the rear.

The interior has also been redesigned. Inside, the conventional dials have been replaced with a 10.2-inch TFT instrument cluster while an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen sits above the climate control module.

There has been no official word yet on the powertrain options however some media reports suggest that the India-spec model could get a 1.6-litre petrol, 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol and a diesel.

Next-gen Volkswagen Polo sedan (Vento) spotted in Brazil

Volkswagen has been working on the new-gen Polo since a fairly long time. Multiple spy shots of early prototypes of the new-gen Polo have already surfaced on the Internet. With development of the new Polo in its final stages, Volkswagen now appears to have started work on the Polo-based sedan, which is sold as the VW Vento in India. A heavily camouflaged test mule of the new-gen Vento was recently spotted in Brazil.

Like the new Polo, the next-gen Vento will also be based on Volkswagen's MQB A0 platform. The new Vento will have a 2,560 mm wheelbase, 7 mm more than the model it will replace. The longer wheelbase is expected to translate into slightly better cabin space. The new model will be around 70 kg lighter than the current Vento. The spotted test mule's heavy camouflage successfully disguises major design elements of the car, though reports suggest it to come with LED headlamps and taillights, DRLs, new bumpers, a redesigned C-pillar, and a higher boot lid.

On the inside, the new-gen Polo sedan is expected to come with a new dashboard layout, an advanced touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while other features on offer will include automatic climate control, cruise control and ambient lighting.

For the Indian market, the new-gen VW Vento will likely continue with the existing 1.2-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel engine options. Transmission duties will be handled by a 5-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG.
