Kawasaki dealer cancels booking over handling charge dispute

Kawasaki's authorised dealer cancelled the booking of a Ninja 300 when the customer asked an explanation for the high RTO charges mentioned in the quotation given to him.

Motosaki Motorcycles in Thane was charging Rs. 56,875 as RTO charges, while the actual tax amount was much lower. When probed by a customer, the dealership revealed that the amount includes Rs. 1,100 as inspection charges, Rs. 10,000 as agent charges, Rs. 5,300 as warehousing cost and Rs. 4,000 as loading/unloading cost. Taking additional money from customers under the guise of handling charges is illegal in India.

When the customer wrote to Kawasaki about this, the company replied with a standard email apologising for the inconvenience and that the matter was being forwarded to the concerned department. In the email, the customer had mentioned that he would like to get the booking cancelled if the illegal charges are not waived off. Subsequently, he received a text message through WhatsApp from the dealer informing him that the booking had been being cancelled as the management couldn't waive of the aforementioned charges.

It has been reported that the Kawasaki's dealers in other cities like Hyderabad are also charging Rs. 10,000 over and above the mandatory charges / taxes from customers.

Rumour: Kawasaki Ninja 300 to be heavily localised

Kawasaki is reportedly planning to increase the localised content on the Ninja 300. Until now, the Ninja 300 was imported via the completely knocked down (CKD) route. Localization is expected to bring down the price of the bike and make it more competitive, especially against new entries like the Apache RR 310 and the BMW G 310 R.

While the exact list of components that will be localised is not known, media reports suggest that parts like the bodywork and lights, battery and wiring, wheels and tires as well as other components could be sourced from local vendors. The move is also likely to bring down the cost of spare parts as most of the components will be made in India.

The Ninja 300 is powered by a 296 cc, parallel-twin cylinder engine that develops 38 BHP @ 11,000 rpm and 27 Nm of torque @ 10,000 rpm. It is mated to a 6-speed transmission. The bike comes equipped with 37 mm telescopic front forks and an adjustable monoshock in the rear. Brakes comes in the form of 290 mm and 220 mm petal type discs in the front and rear respectively. Currently, the Ninja 300 is not offered with ABS.

The localised Ninja 300 could be launched around the festive season. However, Kawasaki is yet to make formal announcement regarding this.

Kawasaki Ninja 300 KRT Edition launched in India

Kawasaki has silently introduced the Ninja 300 KRT Edition in India. Though the company hasn’t released an official statement yet, media reports claim that the bike is already on display at various Kawasaki dealerships across the country. The KRT Edition comes as a replacement of the Ninja Special Edition which was launched in November last year. The Ninja 300 KRT Edition is priced at Rs. 3.61 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai).

KRT stands for Kawasaki Racing Team. The KRT Edition features the racing team's stickers on the side and KRT badges near the fuel cap and fairing. The bike gets a black and green paint job, similar to the treatment found on the Kawasaki factory racing team that participates in the World Superbike Championship.

No mechanical changes have been made to the KRT Edition. It derives power from a 296 cc, liquid-cooled, parallel-twin engine, which is similar to the one offered with the regular Ninja 300. This engine is mated to a 6-speed gearbox. Power and torque outputs are rated at 38 BHP and 27 Nm.

Scoop! Kawasaki Ninja 300 spotted @ Pune

The launch of the Kawasaki Ninja 300 (by Bajaj) seems to be around the corner with numerous sightings of this Sportsbike in Pune.

The Ninja 250R had a promising start in India. However, the twin faced increasing competition from Bajaj’s stable itself; the KTM Duke 200 & Pulsar 200NS, along with the Honda CBR 250R, have eaten into the 250cc Ninja’s sales. They were also significantly better priced. Although the Ninja 250R was quite a performer, customers found more value in the other bikes at lower price points. The launch of the Ninja 300 might help Kawasaki distance itself from the current crop of 200-250cc motorcycle. The higher cubic capacity could hit the sweet spot in terms of the price-to-performance ratio.

What's new:

  • Reworked body language and a new frame. Looks more edgy than before.
  • 296cc parallel twin engine with a 6-speed transmission.
  • The Ninja 300 is expected to churn out 38 BHP @ 11,000 RPM. However, we'll wait for exact figures post launch.
  • ABS to be made available as an option.
  • The meter console is in line with current tastes and has an analogue tachometer + digital speedometer.
  • A better digital fuel-injection system that is supposedly more efficient.
  • F.C.C. clutch with assist & slipper functions.
  • 10-spoke 17" alloy wheels with a 140 section rear tyre.
  • Curved 2-into-1 exhaust system.
  • Revised suspension setup.

All details mentioned above have been sourced from Kawasaki's website. Most of it is expected to remain the same on the bike sold in India.

Pre-launch bookings are rumoured to have already begun, with ex-showroom prices for the N300 (non-ABS) at 3.2 Lakhs and the N300 with ABS at 3.4 Lakhs. Do note that this pricing is entirely speculative.
