The Datsun Redi-Go is scheduled to be unveiled on April 14, 2016. The car is based on the same CMF-A architecture as the Renault Kwid. Initially, it is expected to come with the same 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox as the Renault.

Rumour: Datsun Redi-Go India launch on April 14

Datsun has been looking to redeem itself in India, where the brand laid the foundation stone for its global revival. The brand launched the Go hatchback and Go+ sub-4 metre MPV in the country, but both products received a weak response. Now, Datsun is gearing up to introduce the Redi-Go hatchback and as per a report by NDTV, the car will be launched on April 14, 2016.

The Kwid proved to be a game changer for Renault and Datsun will be banking on the Redi-Go to be its volume driver in a similar fashion. The Redi-Go uses Renault-Nissan's CMF-A platform, which underpins the Renault Kwid. The car is likely to share a lot of components with the Kwid, including the 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox.

The Redi-Go will be Datsun's third model in India. The Renault-Nissan alliance plant in Chennai, where the Redi-Go will be produced, has already started a third production shift to accommodate the Redi-Go, apart from scaling up to meet the strong demand for the Kwid.

Nissan and Datsun target 5 percent market share in India

Datsun and Nissan are targeting a combined market share of 5% in India by 2020. As of January 2016, their combined market share stands between 1-1.5%.

A 5% market share might seem like an ambitious target, especially after considering the duo's low brand recall and weak dealership network in the country. However, the head honchos at Nissan-Datsun have identified these shortcomings and are confident that by fine-tuning its communication strategy, improving distribution in non-metros and offering captive finance solutions, the brand is likely to achieve its target, with Datsun contributing to half this volume.

Datsun plans to introduce the Redi-Go hatchback and the Go Cross compact crossover, which was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo.

Renault too had set a target of 5% market share in India by 2017 and going by the Kwid's blockbuster performance, it seems that target is likely to be achieved. Nissan and Datsun are hopeful that their cars drive in the volumes as well, and help them achieve their ambitious target market share by 2020.
