Yamaha R7 and R3 spotted at MMRT in Chennai

Yamaha might also introduce the MT-07, which is the naked version of the R7.

The Yamaha R7 and R3 sports bikes have been spotted at the Madras Motor Race Track (MMRT) near Chennai. Reports suggest that the bikes were there for a TVC shoot, which suggests we might see a market launch soon.

Yamaha had showcased its range of big bikes at a dealer event held earlier this year, and the R7 and R3 were among the line-up.

The Yamaha R7 is a mid-capacity sports bike powered by a 689cc parallel-twin engine producing 72 BHP and 63 Nm. It will compete with the Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the Honda CBR650R.

The Yamaha R3 is powered by a 321cc, liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine that makes 42 BHP and 29.5 Nm. It will lock horns with the KTM RC 390 and Kawasaki Ninja 400.

Yamaha also plans to bring the MT-09 to India, but may rule out the Tenere 700.

Yamaha plans to introduce the R7 and MT-07 models in India before the end of 2022.

According to a media report, the bike maker plans to import both bikes in small numbers via the CBU route. Yamaha is also looking to avoid the OBD-2 regulations by bringing the bikes in this year.

It is said that the launch of the R7 and MT-07 may be pushed to 2024, if Yamaha is unable to import them by the end of this year. Both bikes are powered by a 689cc parallel-twin engine that puts out 72 BHP and 67 Nm.

It has also been reported that Yamaha intends to bring the MT-09 to India, but may rule out the Tenere 700.

2022 Yamaha YZF-R7 globally unveiled

The new Yamaha R7 bridges the gap between the brand's R3 and the litre-class R1 superbike.

Yamaha has globally unveiled its all-new YZF-R7 sportbike. The new R7 is the latest model in Yamaha's R-Series. It replaces the brand's R6 model and bridges the gap between the R3 and the R1 superbike.

The all-new Yamaha YZF-R7 features a fully-faired design, with rear-set footpegs, clip-on handlebars, a skinny seat and a sculpted fuel tank. The motorcycle also features a single-pod projector headlamp, with LED DRLs on either side. It gets a fully digital LCD instrument cluster as well. The 2022 Yamaha R7 will be offered in two colour choices: Team Yamaha Blue & Raven Black.

The new middleweight fully-faired sportbike is based on the brand's MT-07 streetfighter. The new Yamaha R7 carries forward the same 689cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin CP2 engine. It produces 72 BHP @ 8,750 rpm and 67 Nm @ 6,500 rpm; paired with a 6-speed gearbox with assist and slipper-clutch offered as standard.

The new YZF-R7 gets 41 mm KYB upside-down front forks and a mono-shock setup at the rear, both with preload and rebound adjustability. Braking is handled by dual 298mm discs at the front and a single 245mm disc at the rear, supported by dual-channel ABS. The motorcycle rides on Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport tyres with 120/70 and 180/55 profiles at the front and rear, respectively.

Yamaha has priced the new YZF-R7 at US$ 8,999 (approximately Rs 6.57 lakh). The company is unlikely to bring the R7 to Indian shores anytime soon.
