After many research on the net i decided to go for Pioneer 600AV (review : Pioneer DV-600AV DVD Player Review - Home Cinema Reviews - TrustedReviews). There is a very good offer of Rs. 5.5k is going on at Pioneer showrooms in bangalore. This was priced at 10.5k initially and seems to be a VFM purchase with the offer. The new model 610AV is priced at same 10.5k I think. But these two models have very little difference between them. Only the CD to USB rip and High Def JPEG play is the difference.
Pros: Very good picture quality and audio (I'm loving it). Loads of features. Plays DVD audio and SACD. Have both optical and co-axial Digital output.
Cons : Doesn't come with an HDMI cable. But I already had one so it didn't cause me any trouble.

Philips 3996 is available for Rs. 3690 at Xcite, Bangalore and Rs. 3750 at Philips Arena.

Hi, I am planning to buy a DVD player with USB, HDMI upscaling and which has optical out and 5.1 channel support with DTS and Dolby support.
LG 388 has 1.1 and Philips 3996 has USB 2.0
But features-wise the LG seems to have more features and connection options.
My budget is sub 5k.
Any suggestions??

Pioneers are the best in Blue Ray, DVD players bit costly compared to Philips,
Pioneer model was IIRC some 610 and Philips is 3996 and 5996.Check National market fro Pioneer and SP Road for Philips.

Update - I purchased the Philips DVP3256 for Rs. 2400.
Called one of the Philips service centers & they guided me on how to reset the Region Code to 0.
As of now, very happy with the player.

Onida HDR-5522 "The Atom" DVD player

Has anyone tried the new Onida Atom DVD player. It's got a lot of features, plays through USB & also memory cards. Looks nice as well. It includes a HDMI cable & a memory card adapter.

Bought it during the weekend for 3,300.

The player is really good. It does not play FM. It has option of HDMI but I have not tried it since my TV doesn't support HDMI. It also has an optin of ripping audio cd's to a pen drive. Its worth the money I paid. I bought in a shop inYeshwanthpur. Let me know if you need any more details & as well as the place.

Hypercity seems to be having a clearance sale of sorts for Philips DVD players. But the offers don't seem as competitive compared to some of the low prices we've seen in this thread.

The models available are:
3256 - Rs 3000
3356 - Rs 3200
3336 - Rs 3500
3996 - Rs 3900
3388 - Rs 4990

Of these, which is the best buy for someone who currently uses a four-year-old 21-inch CRT but is looking at upgrading to an HD-ready LCD/Plasma before the end of the year? The 3996?

After further research, I'm still confused. Does anyone know which of the following models from Philips is the best buy for someone who's upgrading from a 21" CRT to a 37" LCD? The official website doesn't seem to feature any of these players for some reason -- maybe they've been phased out.

DVP3996 (Rs 3900)
DVP3368 (Rs 3700)
DVP3388 (Rs 4900)

All of the above come with USB 2.0 and a bundled HDMI cable. They play a similar range of formats (including DivX). The 3388 claims to have "gold-plated" HDMI connectors, but I don't see any additional features that justify the 1K premium.

Any tips?
