PICS: Tata begins testing Nano Twist Active AMT

Mod Note: Our Tata Nano AMT Report has been taken live at this link. Please continue the discussion over on the new thread. Thanks!

Tata Motors had displayed a cutaway of the Nano equipped with an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) at the 12th Auto Expo, which was held in February. Now the company has begun testing the car. It is called the Nano Twist Active AMT.

Spy pictures of the interior of the car in its testing guise reveal the Nano's biggest gain since the addition of power steering. The AMT is expected to make driving the car more stress-free as it does not involve depressing a clutch pedal. Drivers can use the system like a regular automatic or change gears manually in a sequential manner. Additionally, AMT is not as expensive as a conventional automatic, which increases its appeal.

For the exterior, the Nano Twist Active AMT is expected to get new headlight and tail lamp clusters, bumpers and bonnet trim. Tata Motors is trying to reposition the Nano and shake away its 'cheap car' image. This leads us to believe that the company will load the Nano with features like air-conditioning, power steering, Bluetooth compatible stereo and front power windows. The car could also get an openable tailgate, which will increase its versatility.

There are no details available on any engine updates to the Nano, but it is rumoured that the Nano Twist Active AMT will get a larger 3-cylinder, petrol engine with a power output of 67 bhp.

re: PICS: Tata begins testing Nano Twist Active AMT

This is awesome news. I was contemplating of getting one twist for wife's use. But, I guess it makes sense to wait for Active to hit the markets. It would be such a fun toy to drive around.
With the existing simple driving in NANO Twist AMT would be icing on the cake.
Any news on when can buyer expect Active hitting the markets?

Brilliant Scoop!
This AMT blaze has actually brought the convenience of an automatic within the reach of the masses and this is definitely a very good move. Boy, Tata is trying so hard to up its game! First the Bolt & Zest and the Nano with EPS and now an AMT too. Its just win-win for consumerism. Competence and convinience which incorporates the best of what technology has to offer and at a very reasonable cost is AMT in a nutshell for me.

Ahh! now Nano joins the AMT bandwagon. With more and more car models getting sucked into this AMT vortex, Magneti Marelli (makers of AMT) would be laughing all the way to bank. AMT Celerio is already commanding a huge waiting period. I hope they have enough capacity to satisfy the rising demand. Nano with power steering, AMT and may be a larger engine would sure be a delight to drive in city traffic.

The article from Motoroids also mentioned about the car being available only at the end of 2014 or the early 2015, which is disappointing. Why take so long to release the car into the market when there is already a ready-market.

They need to do a significant look change (a bit of the Eurpopa) to give the car aspirational value that would go along with the AMT.

Good tidings! however, TATA should use this opportunity to give an image boost to the Nano and make it look different too(with AMT) with some minor changes(like bigger tyres, new front & rear design etc).

It will cost some money and time, but holds the promise of a good game changer!

If that is true, I think I will be in line for a 3-cyl manual transmission Nano Twist Active.

Now they are talking Awesomeness is on a roll! The poor car was nearly killed by some insane marketing strategies. Anybody aware of the roadmap?

re: PICS: Tata begins testing Nano Twist Active AMT

Two things I want to point out. First, there is no mention of "disc brake". It is required and if it is not still available, how does it really shed away the image. A 3+lakh car without a disc brake?

Second, what is this madness with "Active". You have Nissan Micra Active, Honda Activa Active, and now Nano Twist Active. Will Nano now twist customers actively? Is it really that expensive to come up with new names? And in both Nissan and Honda case "Active" refers a watered down version, and here Tata's name their top end version of Nano with "Active". Seriously, does anybody in Tata still give any consideration whatsoever with these important nuances of the market. I am seriously disappointed.

Agree, this could be a game changer. They need to build aspirational value around it.
And the car needs upgrade not only on exteriors & 3 cylinder engine as remoured, IMO they should change the interiors as well, get that instrument cluster to its right place, give dashboard a pleasing & premium look (something like Hyundais). Even at a increased cost it will be killer proposition for our ever congesting cities.

What would interest me would be the 'Nano Europa'. Minus the tacky bits.

This has a different front bumper though (with a black honeycomb grille). Not sure if its to accomodate a bigger heat exchanger. Though this would look great with Europa derived lights.

I think it is cosmetic. AFAIK, there were no complaints about the AC in the Nano.
