Thanks.
No need to go via Hunsur. Take the regular Mananthvady road to Handpost. Its is perfect condition all the way till Handpost.

You may already know this, just in case..
If you start early from Bangalore, skip the outer ring road at Columbia Asia junction and go straight into Mysore city and take the Mananthavady Road from the Calicut Road (NH 212).
This way you can stop for breakfast at Kamat Madhuvan near the Palace and then just a few Km ahead take a right turn (before the outer ring road junction). If you see the ring road junction or the Mysore Airport, you've gone too far.

Thanks Ampere & NPV.

The reason for considering Hunsur route was since I was not sure of condition of Mananthavady road. Since that is not an issue I guess would drive through town as suggested by NPV. I am not a big fan of Mysore ORR anyways, I feel it is too much a deviation and Mysore traffic is not that bad too.

In fact I would suggest take the ORR. Another reason for that is it has nice hotel for break fast as well! Called Hotel Kalyani

Very spic and span, good food and quite upmarket. That would also allow you to drive all the way through Mysore road and you can cross this stretch before crowd builds up.

Re: Road conditions to Kabini JLR

Suhas, had gone towards Orange County about 10 days back.

Mananthavady road is good. Just one speed breaker between Mys & HandPost

Reg Mysore, please take the Ring road, as mentioned by Ampere. It's only 6 km extra, but traffic through city is slow.

Is the construction/widening work on the ring road complete ? I remember last year there were several diversions as well, hope all this is now complete.
Couple of days ago on my return leg I saw some work going on at one end of the ring road where it connects to the Calicut NH 212.

Re: Road conditions to Kabini JLR

There are a couple of small sections that need work to double the road
1. Initial part - near the railway bridge/ underpass
2. Before KEB junction. Watch out for this one.

Otherwise, did not see any construction activity

I had been to Serai Kabini last weekend which is 1km further on the same road as JLR. The roads up to Antharasanthe are very good. One/two humps between Mys->Handpost and 2 humps beyond in a village where there is a perpendicular left turn. You can easily do Mysore to JLR <2hours with sedate 60-70kmph speeds.

Re: Road conditions to Kabini JLR

Thanks for the route information everyone.
Did Bangalore - Mysore - JLR trip last weekend. Started from home near Marathahalli around 05.30 AM, usual route to reach Mysore road is to take NICE road. Thought of breaking the routine and went through the city. Big mistake since Mysore road fly-over is closed, so had to drive through Kalasipalayam at time most of intra-city buses were arriving.
On reaching Mysore took ring road and got on to Manathavady road. Road is in good condition barring some 3 KMs just before reaching JLR, road repair is ongoing so hope it will be fine in few months.

Reached JLR around 10.30 AM, roamed around the property till 12.30 which is the check-in time.
Also en-route to safari noted that road is bad for few KM's before Nagarhole park entry is also bad, however once you cross sanctuary check post roads are superb.

While returning to Bangalore on Sunday, had to take few KM's of deviation through some country road which had fair bit of off-roading due to an accident which has caused road block.

While in JLR opted for boat safari for evening and jeep safari in morning. Was able to spot huge herds of elephants, counted till 70.
Jeep safari is divided in to two route A & B, we took route B. Which takes you to the right side forest from Manathavady road. Route A takes you to the left of the road. This is my first trip to Nagarhole in some 23 years or so. The forest is abundant with wildlife, though the big cat still eluded us.

Re: Road conditions to Kabini JLR

Can someone please give the latest state of roads to Kabini river lodge from bangalore? Trip planned for 26th and 27th september

Also is it worth taking the kanakapura-malavalli-bannur-mysore road instead of the regular SH17? Heard that there were some constructions going on in the malavalli-bannur-mysore stretch. The road through bannur town is usually a disaster.

We went to river lodges about 3 years ago and after the turnoff at the nagarhole park entrance. the roads were a disaster till the resort.

The roads from Mysore to Kabini is in excellent condition currently. No bad sections anywhere. Watch out for the speed breakers once you turn towards the village road after Handpost. Drove this route last month.

The Bannur route is in good condition. Bannur town roads are in better condition now as per latest updates. If you are planning to start from Bangalore after 8 AM from Bangalore or 4 PM from Mysore on a weekend - this route makes sense. The drive will be more relaxing compared to the busy SH17.

Re: Road conditions to Kabini JLR

Made the trip to kabini river lodge over the weekend.

Took Bangalore-Kanakapura-malavalli-bannur-mysore-Hand post- Kabini route while going

Bangalore-Kanakapura - Good road surface. No potholes. Quite a bit of traffic.

Kanakapura - Malavalli - Very good roads. Sparse traffic. Best to maintain 80 kmph speed due to curves and blind spots in the road.

Malavalli - Bannur - The initial section from malavalli towards bannur is ok. About halfway there is construction going on and road has no tar. The road through bannur town is pathetic as always. Lot of speed breakers some invisible

Bannur - Mysore - Ok but broken in stretches. Some invisible speed breakers.

Mysore - Hand post- Amazing road. Very scenic due to paddy growing season. Few speed breakers. Sparse traffic

Handpost-Kabini - The village diversion road has been resurfaced and very nice. Lots of speedbreakers but they are marked. Fun to drive though one has to slow down for the speed breakers.

Last 3 kms to JLR - Broken roads but nothing that a normal sdean cannot handle

The route should be: Mysore-Hunsur-Gonikoppal-Kutta Not sure about the road via Nagarhole wild life sanctuary.

The best and fastest route is Mysore-Handpost-Bavali-Kattikulam-Kutta. Roads are excellent through out.
If you want to try the Nagerhole forest route, you can take Mysore-Hunsur-Nagerhole-Kutta. This is going to be the shortest route but around 20 kms in the Nagerhole tiger reserve is broken.
From Kutta to Talassery you can either take Kutta-Kattikulam-Mananthavadi-Boys town-Kottiyoor-Kannavam-Koothuparamba-Talassery or Mananthavadi-Thottilpalam-Kuttiyadi-Nadapuram-Peringathoor-Talassery. Both are almost same distance and road condition is decent.

The Gonikoppal route is going to be too long. It will add around 25 kms extra and 5-6 kms bad roads.
