Rim size: 16" x 4.5" .
Tyres : 6.00 x 16, 8 PR

@sreejesh: I think that the PCD of the latest Mahindra vehicles are now 160PCD so the army rims won't fit. Besides the rims are too heavy not advisable. I also think the 6.00 x 16 tire maybe too skinny for the Army Rims. You will have to 7.00 x16 if you want to stick with NDMS. Either way, I don't suggest the Army rims due to the weight.

Hi Sharath,

Most Cross-Ply Tyres have an Aspect Ratio of 85-100%.

If for a given size (7.00X16) two different Brands have varying OD/Static Loaded Radius it is because of construction.

One which is Taller is also Broader.

Aspect Ratio of 110% or 1.1 were used before the 1930's in passenger Cars.

No where have I implied it is more than 100%, it is your interpretation.

Arka

Hello, Gurus
can anyone tell me , about 9.00 X 16 NDMS tyre up to 12 ply Rating ?
I need this to be a Cross ply.

I want to experiment a little with the Land Rover ( kerb weight 1800 kg/ GVW up to 2700 kg , )

Hi Sudarshan,

I once flirted with the Idea of using 9.00X16 NDMS.

1) CEAT 9.00X16 10ply is available.

2) SPEEDWAY 9.00X16 8ply is available.

3) MRF 9.00X16 10 ply is available in Rec-Rim Width 6.00T and 6.50H (5 degree Taper Bead)

but they weigh 22-30Kgs each without rims.

Arka

Thanks , Arka.

Why I wanted crossplies , because of stronger sidewalls. Some how I am little doubtful about Radials as they are more prone to sidewall damage on offroads ( specially rocky terrain )

This might sound old school

Currently I am running on Birla steller a 14 ply steel belt Radial , but I dont feel comfortable as the shape it takes ( a typical Radial ) .But so far havent damaged them .

I have modified the discs to cut ring type ( Landy hub fitting section mated to a 16" lcv outer section ) Thease have become notably heavy than the originals ( some 8 kgs )

Now my Question to you is How the weight of tyre+rim ( mine ) will affect off road handling.

So far I havent compared the ride of the steller with lighter tyres ( my combination weighs almost 1.5 times more than a normal disc & 8 ply tyre ) But I dont feel anything notably wrong in current setup.

Also will you please elaborate/share your experiments with 900X16 tyres?

Hi Sudarshan,

A few calculations 1Kg on the Tyre (Un-sprung Mass) = 2-4Kgs of Sprung Mass (Carried Weight)

so the 9.00X16 is an Additional 10Kgs (at least) for each Tyre/Wheel.

10X4X Wheel Rpm = Extra work done by your vehicle and suspension.

These tyres are 34-37" Tall depending on the brand and pattern.

This will adversely affect

1) Reduce the Turning Radius
2) stiffen the suspension Suspension
3) Decrease Jounce/rebound:D (Thanks SPike!!!)
4) Increase wear & Tear Steering Knuckle and Steering system
5) Reduce Torque on the Wheels/Wheel Down Force( Thank DB Sir:uncontrol!!!!)

Regards,

Arka

PS - Spike & DB sir can definitely add much more.

thank you 4x4,

I thought major has a 139.7 PCD.My plan was Chromium plate the Army rim(Army rim looks good and strong enough ) and put the 6.00 - 16 NDMS for a while and change to a good 235/70/R16 AT tire .

Which is the good AT tire for a MWB jeep like Major 4X4 (<Rs.6000 ,235/70/R16)?

My Requirement is :-

1. Good grip on Mud,wet Grass.
2. Should be OK with wet Rocks.
3. A descent performance on Road especially on wet conditions.

Regards,
Sreejesh.

You can go for BF Goodrich AT or Yoko ATs. These should fit in your budget. You an also consider the latest Apollo Hawkz RT.The treat pattern seems good. I have not heard any personal experiences yet about this one, but it is probably the most affordable of the lot.

7.00-16 NDMS is your best resort mate :)

@ The Wolf,
I fail to see how the 7.00-16 are the best resort as they are not really good on wet
rocks and downright useless on wet tarmac.

+ 1 to that!

@Sreejesh: go for Maxxis trepadors if they come in that size. They fit all your requirements perfectly.

On the drive back from Lonavala last Sunday, I remarked to Tejas, that on braking my NDMS on wet roads, I may not hit the car in front of me, but there is a very high probability that I will hit the car to the side of me!

Amazing offroad, can get scary at times on the highway (you always have to be on your guard driving fast or cornering !).

I have them to keep the CJ in 'stock' mode and I love them.

My plan is keep the original NDMS with the stock rims and use the army rims with
a good AT tyre.
What is the price of Maxxis M8060 Trepador ? is it available on 235/70/R16?

It looks great but I am in a tight budget."Maximum utilization of minimum resources!"

What about Goodyear Wrangler AT/S (Rs.5400.00 for 235/70/R16 at Calicut)

Among AT tyres, the Goodyear Wrangle AT/S is fairly low in the rating.

What's the point? If you are planning to use the NDMS only for offroading, then why get the AT tyres for only road use? Get any nylon tyres and carry the NDMS to the location and swap them. That would be the best way to maximize your resources buddy.

Trepadors should be around Rs. 5250 each.
