Mahindra Transfer Cases

Sree and I had a lengthy discussion on the Transfer Cases. We compared some pictures of Sree's MM550 XDB Transmission/T-case along with Beboy's set and my own and this is what I have concluded/guessed. Experts please add your comments.

As far as I understand these are the transmission/transfer case combination Mahindra made.

1) Three Speed Gearbox with T-18 T-Case with twin levers.

2) Four Speed KMT90 with T-18 T-Case with twin levers.

3) Four Speed KMT90 with T-18 T-Case with single lever and U shaped shift pattern. Most common on recent MM540/MM550s

4)BA10 with Electric/Mechanical Borg Warner T-case. Used in Armada Grand and earlier Boleros.

5)BA10 with T-18 Transfer Case with single lever and straight line shift pattern. Used in MM550 XDB.

6)NGT530 with Electric Borg Warner T-Case. Scorpio 4WD/Newer Bolero 4WD and Camper 4WD.

7)NGT520 with T-18 Transfer Case with single lever and straight line shift. Used in Legend/Major/Invader/Bolero DI 4WD.

8)NGT530 with T-18 Transfer Case with single lever and straight line shift. Used in Thar (Guess).

I think you have the Borg Warner and not the T-18 since your rear prop shaft is in line with your gearbox, isn't it?

Dear all - Hmm, interesting. Now where would no 8 be used? With a T18? Torque carrying capacity? Driveline frictional losses? Input / output shafts not concentric? Weight? CG? Emission norms? Noise norms? Why on earth? Hmm, interesting.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

T18 is used only on lower end vehicles like CL550 Major, Di turbo Bolero, Invader etc. Dut i dont think that would be a straight shift like in a Brog warner manual transfer case

Tini, is yours a straight shift or is it like the shift of a single lever transfer case?

All the vehicle above with Bolero storm/Scorpio aggregates use brog warner transfer case only. The advantages-
1. Silent and smoother operation
2. Better torque carrying capacity
3. lower weight
4. lesser frictional losses

Frictional losses is one of the main reason why a 4wd MM540 cannot match the top speed of a 2wd MM540 where as there is no top speed difference between a 4wd and 2wd scorpio.

hence i feel No.8 combination doesnt exist!!

The NGT520 and NGT530 have Identical housing and the rear out put flange is the same, hence you can change the Borg-Warner or T-18 to either using the specific adapter plates.

interestingly the M&M Parts manual call the NGT520-T18 adapter plate a Borg-Warner Plate

The NGT520-T18 use the Borg-Warner Shifter i.e Straight-Line same as the MM550XDB's.

Guys this is M&M not MB. Don't get boggled, what ever mods we try has been tried out by M&M, was not put out on the roads, because of economics.

Regards,

Arka

PS - the good' ol T-90 is doing duty these days in the Mahindra Arjun

Mine is a straight line shifter similar to the MM550 XDB and the latest 5-Speed Major/Invader/Bolero DI 4WD. I looked at the pictures of Sree's transfer case which is mated to his BA10 gearbox and it is identical to mine with the front and rear propeller shafts off-set to the right, unlike the Borg Warner T-Case where the rear shaft is prettymuch inline with the gearbox and only the front has an off-set.

So, I take it that the Thar will have the Borg Warner Manual T-Case. I'll go back to the Thar pictures and see if I can see any where the rear diff is shown clearly. The location of the diff housing should give us an idea if it is T-18 or Borg Warner.

Here comes the word from T18 guru who has assembled transfer cases beyond any onescount

What you said may be right about suitability or adaptability of T 18 to NGT 530. The point is as 4x4 addict listed, point No 8- NGT530 + T18 never existed from factory due to above reasons mentioned in my post. Add to that concerns of not meeting noise regulations and excessive fuel consumption and frictional losses leading to greater emissions.

Having said this can any of the Gurus say what is the maximum torque a T-18 can take?

How is a Gypsy transfercase superior to T-18 as they continue to use the same till today even though it is a gear driven?

Is it the gear construction technology that matters?

What is the weight advantge of Brog warner over T-18?

Hi Vinod,

Till Behram Dabhar replies, I'll try to fill in.

T-18 Max input torque is 30KgM.

1) The Dana Spicer Model 18 Transfer Case - Novak Conversions

2) Dana Spicer 18 - The Best Transfer Case Ever?

3) Jeep Transfer Case: Spicer 18 / Dana 18

The T-Case designs are 2 Kinds
1) Divorced - 3 Shafts (Gypsy/Trax/TMB/407/Sakthiman)

2) Mated - 2 Shaft Design

1) The 3 Shaft Design are stronger as the input pinion is fully floating on its on intermediate shaft; running through the T-Case and the torque is transferred, through the yoke/companion flange.

2) In the Mated design the Main Gear Box Output is not fully-floating and the T-Case input pinion is bolted on to the Main G-Box output. THIS BECOMES THE WEAKEST LINK.

Deciding Factors
1) Mated vs Divorced
2) Chain Drive vs Gear/Pinion Drive
4) Differential Ratios T-18 (1/2.46) MG410 (1.22/2.2) Trax (1/2.09)

Arka

Arka, in first gear will it not be more than 30kgM what the gearbox can produce? if the engine can produce 12kgM.

Whats the length of the intermediate shaft ? 3/4 inch is the weakest. Is that what we have on Mahindras even today?

Why hasnt M&M preferred a divorced T/C if the advantages are too obvious?

I guess they are traditionalists, they shun the word divorce.

Meanwhile, can somebody show me the difference between divorced TC and mated TC using some images. I am somehow unable to understand this part until now.

Sorry Guys. Two days too late, but what I have is an NGT530 with a Borg warner manual shift transfer case. Again, almost impossible to procure.
Arka, I am not too sure that the 520 and 530 have the same rear housing!

Borg-Warner questions

a few questions about t.c.
  • what is the exact model no. of the Borg-Warner t.c. used by mahindra not from the mm parts list but the actual model no. used in us ?
ex
Borg-Warner BW1350
Borg Warner 1350 Transfer Case Parts Illustration and parts list! - Drivetrain.com
Borg-Warner BW1356
BW1356 Transfer Case Parts Illustration and parts list, you save money! - Drivetrain.com

btw the BW1350 has the same low ratio of 2.48 as mm t.c.
  • what is the lowest gearing possible for mm borg warner t.c. ?
  • which one is better borg warner or t 18 ? (with bs4 engine+ngt530)
