M&M Engine and Gearbox combos for JEEPs

Hi All,

Can we collate a list of Engines and Gearboxes used on M&M JEEPs for a better understanding of which Gearbox is suited with which engine. It will be a boon for everyone who is looking for a bolt-on conversion or a job which requires minor alterations.

While I agree that combos like Allan's orangie or Gaurav's CJ340 are possible but they require major fabrication or adapter plates in which one would not want to jump unless he is technically sound with JEEPs.

Eg:

1. Hurricane (CJ3B) - T90 - T18
2. Hurricane (MM440) - KMT90 - T18
3. B275 International Harvester (CJ500D) - T90 - T18
4. XDP - KMT90 - T18
5. XD3P - KMT90 + ?
6. XD3P + BA10 4x4
7. MDI3200 + ?
8. Perkins P4 + ?
9. Simpsons S4 + ?
10. 2.6 CRDe + ?
11. 2.2 MHawk + ?

The idea here is to understand which engine / gb combo would be reliable and can be used on a JEEP without a fuss.

Can a scorpio's 2.6 CRDe be mated to a BA-10 or a NGT-520 ?
Can this setup be used on a 90 W.B CJ500 ?
What alterations would have to be taken care of ?
Any other suggested Gearbox with the 2.6 CRDe on the CJ500 ?

S4 Engines

For the S4 3.3L 4 Cyl Diesel Engine the following Gear Boxes were used.

i) KMT90 (2WD & 4WD)
ii) Isuzu 5 Speed (Tourister not 4WD)

The FC Van with F4-134 had a T-90 with a Lower 1st Gear and reverse Gear, this was optional while purchasing 4WD JEEPs.

Thanks for the information Arka.

From the above mentioned list, can I conclude that a combo of SZ2600 (Non CRDe I presume) + BA-10 + T-18 is possible ?

If yes then:

a. What would be the list of to do's for such a conversion on a CJ500 ?
b. Would it be a good combo as far as off roading is concerned ?
c. Will the existing chassis support the extra weight ?
d. Would there be a diff. swap required ?

Sorry if that sounds stupid but I am a novice when it comes to engines and gb's

a. DO Not Do, this conversion.
b. The Engine is Good and the BA10 is pathetic in terms of ruggedness.
c. the scorpio engine weighs 340kgs approx, so we expect you to do a lot of trussing.
d. FFRA (The T-18 is RHS out put so no swap is required).

if you can pick up a Scorpio Engine with the NGT530 4WD then consider doing the swap

Ask RedMM340 for further details, he has a CJ340 with SZ2600 and a MM550XDB with SZ2600 + BA10 combo.

Regards,

Arka

I have a CJ500 with all stock Engine(International Diesel (B275)) and T90 Gearbox with T-18 4WD Transfer case.on long drive Its difficult to drive the jeep on the road with the Three speed gear box.So iam planing to change the gear box in to a 4 speed one.

I already have a T-18 2 liver Transfer case. From Arka's Post I found that I can Use this Combination KMT-90 & T-18.

1. Can I use this combination ?
2. Do I need to change the clutch ?
3. Is this a direct fit to the Engine ?

Please help.

@sreejeshmp

(KMT-90 & T-18) Combination to international B-275 is definitely possible, with the following mods.

1. Bell housing to be changed.
2. Your existing T-18 case has to changed, all internal components can be put in to the new case to suite the KMT-90 but for the transmission main shaft output gear, since KMT-90 has 15 spline.
3. Gearbox box cross member to be moved back by 2.5 inch
4. Rear Propeller shaft to be cut by 2.5 inches and front propeller shaft 2.5 inch extension required.
5. Clutch control torque tube and cable to be changed. Torque tube pivot to be relocated.
6. Body tub will require trimming suitably to allow the gear shift lever housing to stay clear.
7. Silencer muffler pipe might require some mild rerouting if you have a transmission drum brake(I assume wheelbase 91 inch).

Clutch drive plate, fork, throw out bearing and guide requires no change, needs replacement only if worn out.

Hope this info is useful to you,

Chengappa.

Does any one know from which year the DI Engine (MDI3000) was introduced in the CJ/CL range by Mahindra. I am looking for a used Jeep and want to go only for the DI Engine rather than the older B275 Engine.

@Chengappa: The combination you mentioned was standard fare on all Invaders and Major prior to to the MDI3200TC launch.

Sabareesh,
This is a very educative thread started by you.
The above combo as mentioned by Arka, has been done by me on a 540, it is magical on and off-road.

Thank you for the info. Are you sure they had MDI3200 with the 3-speed T-90 ? or did they have KMT-90 4-speed transmission.

Chengappa.
