Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Came across this rendering of Sumo Army with the grille of Tata Merlin Light armoured vehicle. Next facelift for Tata Sumo?

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Alas, the front track width of the sumo appears wider adding stability.
I moved to the middle east 2 years ago and the first thing I did is got me a jeep grand Cherokee with a petrol 5.7 L Hemi V8 330 bhp. A real gas guzzler to the true sense. I get 4.5 km to the litre and need around 250 litres gasoline a month. I was looking high and low for a used 8.1 litre GMC suburban but my colleagues talked me out. We are on the last leg of the big guzzlers before the electric car invasion hits us full frontal. Our kids will never be able to drive gas guzzlers, pollute or cause global warming. What a shame.
I was just thinking this eve that when I leave the middle east, I wish to dismantle and bring my jeep hemi engine + drive train and illegally fit it in a Tata Sumo. Anyone has experience on bringing engines legally / illegally from overseas. Wicked.ideas will be much appreciated.

It is the 2.0 litre BS-III IDI. It is available for government agencies. Tata stopped selling the 4WD version to general public long back.

I so wish I had got a 4WD instead of my 2WD Victa GX.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

Borg and Warner India, website has the "shift on the fly" fully divorced transfer case. It needs a simple 12 v power supply, switch after a cut out. The activation is by a simple solenoid. Spicer India sells the front and rear differentials. You need a good mechanism to tailor make the prop shafts and get leaf springs on the solid front axles.
I don't know the cost involved but it can be done, if money is not a constraint.

Neither Team-BHP nor I condone or support any illegal activity. I am shocked that you would consider such a thing and shocked that you would try to enlist our help. Shocked it is I am!

That being said, it might be possible to import some scrap metal that just happens to look like a 5.7L hemi V-8. Or a piece of neuvo-art based on an automotive theme. You may have to lubricate your local RTO also. Last time I knew you could only swap in an engine of equal or less displacement than the original. Also, air pollution checks are getting more sophisticated here. Some areas are now now using air pollution test machines that sniff your exhaust pipe, the one on your vehicle. Insuring said vehicle may be a little complex, too.

Think Force Gurkha. Similar idea. No major tinkering needed.

Re: Tata Sumo four-wheel-drive

I used to own a 3.0L Sumo. Unfortunately the 4x4 version did not come with the
bullet proof 3.0L engine but a 2.0L weak, problematic over-heating, under powered piece of junk. I never saw one that wasn't smoking. I'd pass on this.

The front suspension and even the front rails of the chassis were suspect, too.

This one is listed as an ex-Army 3.0, but I think the papers look incomplete. Not updated to current owner. May be should get this post deleted.

My dad owned 2.0L Sumo for almost 15 years, never faced problem of over-heating or smoking. The front suspension or chassis were changed in 97 or 98 production models, the initial batch had problems were in the car turtled.

If I today get the 2.0L 4x4 I would buy it considering the spares will still be available and keep it as a farm SUV. Never liked the 3.0L version it had that odd stance with raised rear suspension.
