These are the specs. The rear is Dana 30 if I recall correctly.

FRONT AXLE
Front Axle Independently suspended with automatic hub locks.
Ratio 4.1 (41/10) :1

REAR AXLE
Rear Axle Semi-floating
Ratio 4.08 (49/12) : 1

I will let experts chime in. As per my understanding, the rear axle has been constant atleast till 1997 and same goes for front for the Sumo.

A Tata Spare parts shop should be able to pull up the part number. Tata Safari also used the same axles if I remember correctly, atleast the differential gears are the same. I am not sure if Sumo has the same LSD kit.

That said, may I ask why are you asking? Do you need some parts?

Spare part sites also contain part lists.

Congrats, Deepak. How much did you pay for it ? Would you have any history of this one that you got - from auction to getting it ?

@tsk1979 thanks for the information ! I was expecting the type like Dana 30 with 19 or 30 splines or rear is Dana 44 with 19 or 30 splines basically to source a locker either the Automatic locker or mechanical one for increased off road capability .
@ condor I will be creating a whole new post with the whole story , initial cost including registration is 1.5 presently the SUV undergoing full works engine, suspension and drive train works completed body work commenced 15 Jan 2020 hopefully by Mar 2020 it will be in road .
Drive and ride safe !

Thanks, Deepak. Will wait for your thread after you complete. But wanted to know how good/bad was the condition of the Sumo that you got ? The work was necessary or you are just getting it done up to your liking.

Continuing further to my quest to have a fully equipped over-landing vehicle , will the oft advertised Brazilian steel rims will these fit Tata Sumo ( the rim size of Tata Sumo 2003 is 5.5jx 16 and PDC is 5x160 ) is it the same as M&M Thar ? the steel rims are of PDC 5x160

Stock size for Sumo is 5J x 16 - PCD 160. Thar, Scorpio, Safari rims will all fit - but do check the size so it does not foul anywhere.

Quick questions , noticed that Thar has mechanical shifter for TC and they use the same BW TC can the shifter mechanism be used to convert electric shifter to mechanical.
Drive and ride safe!
Deepak

BW = Borg Warner , TC transfercase apologies for using abbreviations excessively. Tata sumo 4x4 uses the same transfercase was wondering if anyone has tried this alternative, kind of not comfortable with electric shifter.

Shiftster is a way to do so. You could engineer a system over shifster to use levers to achieve the rotary motion

Tata Sumo did not see the BS6 era. It was discontinued sometime late 2019. Tata has exited the entry-level MUV segment.

Padmrajravi, Thank you for your reply.

The only option left is to buy a used Sum or pick a Sumo 4WD from Army scrap!

Not only Army for 4wd, there were a few private sold (have seen a couple taxis here in H.P.), and also other government agencies used them. Saw one at a hospital in Shimla, Fire Departments, Police, etc, in various states.

Someone here in Manali just got one recently from the Snow and Avalanche Research Entity (SASE). It looks to be in good shape, he uses it very regularly.

Hi Eric. Long time no eyeball me you.
Unfortunately these 4wd Sumos did not have the good 3.0L motor (One of the best SOUNDING motors I have ever heard and it came with a 100,000km warranty). Another case of Indian marketing failure.
If Tata had made a 3.0L 4wd they might have had essentially...a Gurkha. I know that B.D. tinkered with that idea when he jumped to Tata. But Tata shot him down.

There was still a suspect Sumo front end suspension and bendable chassis to deal with...a couple of cross rails might have helped, 'ay?
