Re: ARTICLE: Extended Warranties. Yes or No?

I feel that extended warranties were initially offered with liberal terms to drive user adoption, but now that the market is mostly matured, my experience among my network has been that extended warranties are cumbersome to use, do not fully pay out the promised benefits, and generally are not good value.

Can we have a poll added to this thread? And request everyone to share their experiences with it?

Re: ARTICLE: Extended Warranties. Yes or No?

I bought a Hyundai i10 Nios Sportz which is my first car on 4th August. Currently I can avail an extended warranty upto 7 years (4 years in addition to base 3 years) for 24k (+maybe GST) ~28.3k. I have attached the T&Cs (Pic 1, and Pic 3). Being a new car owner with limited running expected, is it worth buying an extended warranty? Also there is an offer for unlimited exchange of some parts for an additional 9.5k/60k km (Shield of Trust program) (Pic 2). Would that also make any sense to buy? Regards.

Hyundia Nios and similar ICE cars are generally reliable and proven and hence it is not strictly necessary to buy the Extended Warranty.

If you plan to keep the Nios for a long time then yes buy the extended warranty.

I will say please follow the maintenance schedule and oil changes etc without fail and only at the authorised service centre. Also be sure to do your tyre balancing and wheel alignment once every 5000kms.

These steps will ensure that your car is looked after properly. These cars, if cared for, do last a long time.

Thanks. Would it make a notable difference in selling price if say I sell my car after 6 years and it still has 1 year Manufacturer's warranty left? It would also probably mean that my car would be company serviced till then and would have a full service record.

No. Nobody cares about all of this when it comes to used cars. All the love and car that you lavish on your car is for your own satisfaction. No one will offer you extra for the extended warranty and for the accessories etc.

As an aside; I have learned the hard way that it is probably best to sell these vehicles via Spinny who are (in my experience having sold one vehicle as well as bought another through them this year) the most professional. (Spinny uses an AI tool and cameras to inspect your car and assess it, I think there is very less room for bias.)

Else you have to hunt up a private sale. And frankly private sale involves a lot of time and effort and most people will tend to low ball thinking they can get a bargain. And on top of that there is the whole rigmarole of RC Transfer and Insurance Transfer and all of that.

This is why I suggest that you buy the Extended warranty only if you intend to keep the car for a longer time.
