You planning to build one?

With the traffic conditions in Indian cities, a smaller vehicle would be a better option.
Matadors were used in the past - they're mostly extinct now, right? Haven't seen one in a while.

I was once taken to the hospital in a tempo traveller ambulance and it was very spacious. If budget is not a concern then I would prefer a tempo traveller as an ambulance any day..

Andhra Pradesh has Travellers for 108 Emergency services. They are free of cost, run by EMRI. Please look up Emergency Management and Research Institute for details.

Other than that, most of the ambulances I see are Maruti Omnis. I feel they are okay in city conditions but what about travelling 150 km distances carrying a patient?

AP Govt used HM RTVs for their area hospitals.

I believe Winger, Bolero Plus are good options. Omni is by far the cheapest one but most dangerous on highways. Also, a Bolero would last much longer than an Omni and cheaper to run, too.

Maruti Versa seems to be an interesting option. I dont know whether Maruti sells Ambulance versions of Versa. Any idea what is the mileage and the cost of spares?

another vehicle to consider may be TATA ACE/MAGIC...

could be a good alternative to OMNI on the "low cost" front

Tata Magic costs almost as much as the Omni. And twice as crude.

Indian ambulances

among all the ambulances I've seen, almost all of them are either omnis or tempo travellers. I understand the omni being chosen ( small size and maneuverability) , but whats so great about the tempo traveler being the popular choice as ambulance?

They come with a very good quality OEM high roof body! This high roof is very important for anything that has to do ambulance duty.
It is a cost effective and reliable vehicle.
Available in various wheelbases, to suit different requirements.

Force Traveler it is. Very comfortable - Though they can still improve on suspension a bit for comfort but may be it is tuned for handling. These are used by 108s and are very good. Next popular here in AP are Omnis (especially on Highways).

the fully equiped Tempo Traveller, can alow the paramedic to stand up and perform a procedure. Recently, they actually sutured a patient in the ambulance and not just provided first aid. They are VERY roomy inside. I guess thats the reason they are using the TTs as ambulances.
