Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

@Peter: Please explain. I know the Spectre is better than the Cone filter but you think cone is not worth it at all? Not that I use one. Just curious.

@CPH: which one DO you use?
@niranjan: which one do you have inside the enclosure?

The spectre flows better because it is designed overall much better in terms of flow dynamics. It is not only important to have suffucient surface area. Yhe K&N has got not only much less area, but also much more length of edging in proportion to the spectre. The problem with edges on filters is that the space from the edge to about 15mm is rather useless. This is the reason why they are not getting as dirty there than in all other areas.

Also the filter throat is designed better resulting in less turbulence.

But you have to remember that the filter on its own is not the whole thing. The filter and the piping together make it, what improves the performance and that in turn needs to be in line with the rest of the components.

I use a filter that is made in Thailand. It has a specific mouth design. The company has a big variety of mouth designs, but as stated above there is more than the filter design. The piping does determine the torque gains. The filter has to make sure that enough air flows. You only can gain maximum torque and good peak power increase when both are right.

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Mayank, the DIA has a twin conical filter which can be regenerated IIRC.

Peter, typically what is the percentage gain in torgue/bhp in a good CAI installation? Or for example, what is the expected gains here on a 101 bhp 146 Nm 1.6 Fiesta?

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

This is it, basically.
This aint my car, but thats how it'll look.
Only difference is, (this is from frankmehta's thread), he's left the original intake intact(right next to the filter, radiator side).
now, i had taken this off to accomodate my original filter, and i dont see ANY way of keeping that intake and using my filter.
plus, i get rid of the k&n, i dont have anywhere to put the breather hose....
K&N has one hole built on the filter base...nada on the spectre....

PS:tried the k&n as per the their instructions, where the filter goes to the top left of the engine bay, with ford's hose.
not really happy.
noise, yes..
but somehow higher pitched than the Spectre.
That was more of a growl, while this sounded like a whine in comparison.
i think 90% psychological, 10% technical, this difference.
lets see.

The DIA is a single cone, but a much better design then the CDA.

Peak power is up by about 6-7% and torque at the lower end can be in excess of 20%. Obviously I can't speak for other designs, but this is the experience with the one I use. But results also vary from model to model. When some inyakes are rather poorly designed it has happened that the gain was 11%. On most cars it is in the region of 5-9%.

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Done....Put the spectre on the tube, breather was a bit of an issue.
Now that i have the dimensions, i'm gonna get a pipe made specifically for the bigger filter, meantime this works well.

New pipe, cos i noticed there is a lot of space available, somehow...

happy days....tomorrow gonna take it to the jaypee track buing built...apparently there are some nice open stretches there already..
YIPPEE!!

Nice! You have finally got it right where you wanted it. The breather pipe extension came with the rest of the piping?

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

@frank: oh she flies, man....i dont know, but io found the K&N restrictive in 1st and second specially...lot of problem in picking up from under 1.5k in 2nd.....but perceptibly better now...
I was on the DND expressway last night, empty, she just blazed away from the tollbooth!!
and the roar, the roar is to kill for!!
DTE too jumped north by about 90 km, but later settled to about 40 up from normal.
lets see what i actually get.
only kicks in when flooring it, so, good for the family too.

@ niranjan: oh yeah!!no , the pipe didnt come with the kit.I got it when i did my "experiments"...its from a Hyundai, i think, cost about 40 bucks

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Maybe of help to others who plan to fiddle.
There's 2 rubber sections, about 2.25" across, and 2" long sealing the pipe to the TB and the filter flange.
Wanted to change them, as too-tight clamping on my part had deformed them somewhat.
Silicone apparently is too expensive, but there's a guy on ebay, zenaracing, who is offering free shipping on silicone hoses, fittings etc.
ordered the same dimensions as above for 5 bucks a pop(usd, ofcourse).

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Mayank,

How is she doing now? Lot more trips to north of 6k rpm because of the wild roar?
That has been true for me at least. But the best part - I used to get as low as 7.5 kmpl when I constantly redline her in all gears earlier, but now it's around 9-9.5 even with the-revlimiter-changes-my-gear driving.
I guess it's a combination of my car going past 10k on the odo plus the CAI

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

5.5 is the maximum i tried.gets slightly worrisome post that.
Manaaged to break a plastic lug on the water catcher thingy when putting in the filter, so it starts vibrating post 5k.plus,considering that its an older car.....
and Damn its good fun!!

And guess what, I've got a similar pipe made now, but in Aluminium!
The steel to my mind seems heavy, and i dont think it can be good for the TB.

Plus, the rebreather oil leak/crankseal leak i told you about?
went away, cos i got the pipe drilled and rebreather attached.

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Update:
replaced the larger conical with the much smaller K&N.
The k&n has about 1/3rd the SA of the spectre filter.
REMARKABLE difference in low-end.
I mean, i think the spectre has degraded somewhat, and i had gotten used to the constant downshifting.
I was not getting a clean pull in 2nd and 3rd if i shifted at under 2k.
yesterday, after i put the k&n in, easy pull even if i change at 1.5-1.8k.
Is this placebo?

One negative though, the roar from the K&N is much lower than the spectre between 3 to 3.8 k.

post 4500 rpm, the car used to perceptibly accelarate even with a small nudge on the throttle with the bigger filter.
not so with the smaller one now, but i only notice cos i miss it...

so, i suppose, lose some, and gain some.
not complaining.

Again, is this just just placebo, or is this sometihng that does happen?

Re: DIY - Spectre Conical Air filter in Fiesta 1.6Sxi

Maybe your spectre was clogged? Did you try cleaning it?
Did you change the plumbing as well or just the filter?
