re: India-bound MG eZS electric SUV unveiled. Edit: Launched at 19.88 lakh

ESZ looks better than Kona and matches Kona spec to spec. If they price it below Kona, I would surely take the ESZ. The exclusive trim gets full panoramic sunroof too :-)

The 0-100 time (8.5s) is also better than Kona and even the Tucson. Let's not even talk about Jeep Compass. I have been living a turbo-petrol life for a decade now, can't put up with slow cars. Anything that takes more than 9 seconds to reach the 100 is strictly a no-no . And I hate the diesel clatter, a silent 0-100 in 9 seconds will be awesome!

Statistically whichever has the least chance of bursting into flames gets my money - Kona or MG eZS

Instead of panaromic sunroof they could have provided a solar panel roof for some range topping like the Prius which gets about 40Kms more with its solar roof.

MG Motors plans to deploy a limited number of ZS EV in India, even before the car's official launch.

Quote:
A limited batch of MG ZS EV cars could be made available to select customers to try out and experience ahead of the full commercial launch as part of the awareness building programme. We are still chalking out the details
Quote:
Furthermore, the automaker's fast-charging infrastructure at limited locations will be in place by October.
The compact SUV ZS EV will have a full-sized boot and room for five.

With the INSANE amount of heat in parts of India, they could add a small boost battery that can be charged with the solar panel. They could have the bragging rights of having "formula E technology"

Is there any study on how Li ion batteries will react in intense heat? Sure we know the impact in cold climate but has it been studied in our conditions where it is humid and hot? I think the early years will be a wait and watch approach for most.

Like KERS in F1 they can call it SERS (Solar Energy Recovery System)

There might be but I have not searched for it, but it is common knowledge that lithium ion batteries and high ambient temperatures does not get along well together and is the reason why dashcameras with super capacitors are preferred over lithium battery models. Lithium battery packs of EVs are actively cooled to keep the battery temperature stable so these are not as vulnerable like those found in electronic gadgets, but still we hear new about EVs going up in flames so they need to prove themselves. I am also on the wait and watch mode reg EVs and its performance and reliability in our weather conditions.

MG ZS EV could be MG's second car for India

As per reports, MG is likely to launch this electric car as their second car for India. The ZS EV comes with a 44.5kWh battery have a driving range of 335km.

Right from the launch, MG Hector marked the entry of the MG brand in the Indian automotive market. Current Indian trend loves SUVs and that could be another reason for MG to add an electric SUV to their Indian stable.

It has also been revealed that MG may launch it towards Q4 2020 or early 2021. As electric cars are about to burn their rubber on Indian roads, the ZS EV could be another winner for MG.

MG launches the brand campaign (change what you can) TV commercial for its ZS ev in India. Does it mean that we might have the vehicle in showrooms by the first week of December?

The website too has been updated for the vehicle.

Interesting info about heat and its effect on battery, eZS seems to have water-cooled battery, not sure how effective it will be in harsh Chennai's heat! Would wait at least couple of summers before going electric

re: India-bound MG eZS electric SUV unveiled. Edit: Launched at 19.88 lakh

MG has officially unveiled the ZS ev today. The car will hit the showrooms in January 2020. The prices though have not been disclosed yet. But every reviewing platform is expecting the price to be in the range of 21-23 lakhs i.e. just shy to that of Hyundai Kona's.

Here is a list of all the specifications.
  • The ZS EV comes with a 44.5 kWh battery that's good for a range of 340 Km (ARAI certified).
  • It has a 141 bhp motor that puts out 353 Nm of torque driving the front wheels.
  • It is equipped with a Type 2 charging socket and can be charged with multiple ways. (Kona uses the same type)
  • A DC fast-charger would be able to juice it up to 80 percent in about 50 minutes.
  • A home fast-charger (7.4 kW), which MG will set up for you when you buy the ZS EV can fully charge it in under 7 hours from empty.
  • There is also a standard 15 amp socket, which can charge it slowly to full in about 19 hours.
  • Fortum and Delta are a couple of partners it is working with to set up the charging ecosystem for the ZS EV.
  • The vehicle operates on a Lithium-ion battery pack that's located under the floor of the SUV. It comes with a warranty of seven years.
  • It comes with a built-in SIM for internet connectivity (hence the Internet Inside badge).
  • It has voice-activated commands, Bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto.
  • Vehicle does gets a panoramic sunroof, just as in the MG Hector.
  • The boot, that can swallow 448 litres of luggage.
  • It gets power-operated driver's seat, automatic lights, LED lighting and DRLs, and 17-inch windmill-inspired alloy wheels.
  • Keyless entry and remote monitoring through a phone app are all part of the package.
  • It has three levels of regenerative braking operated by the "KERS" button on the centre console (F1 inspired, much?).
  • The car has soft-touch plastics and leather all around the cabin.

Interestingly, EV batteries don’t completely degrade even at the end of their useable life in a vehicle. They may not have the capacity to power the car, but there’s enough life left for other operations.

MG Motor India has partnered with Exicom TeleSystems for second-life use of electric vehicle batteries from its upcoming SUV the ZS EV. Exicom will re-deploy MG ZS EV batteries at the end of their useful life with the car and put them through a controlled process of evaluation, disassembly, and repackaging to design custom battery packs for non-automotive applications. Re-purposing batteries is a more environmentally friendly alternative to disposing of them.

These battery packs can be used in a host of non-automotive applications such as home inverters, commercial & industrial UPS, and renewable energy storage packs.

MG ZS EV bookings to open on December 21

According to a media report, MG Motor India will start accepting bookings for the all-electric ZS from December 21, 2019. Prices are expected to be announced in January 2020.

The MG ZS EV is based on the MG ZS SUV. It can seat up to 5 people and comes with an electric motor that has an output of 141 BHP and 353 Nm. It is powered by a 44.5 kWh liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery that offers a claimed maximum range of 340 km on a single charge. According to MG, the battery can be recharged to 80% of its capacity within 50 minutes using a 50 kW DC fast charger. A 7.4 kW AC home charger can recharge the battery in 6-8 hours. The car comes with three driving modes with three levels of regenerative braking.

Initially, the electric SUV will be sold in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Ahmedabad.

If this battery re-purposing system works out, I will be very interested in considering the eZS as my next vehicle. I have been reading long term reviews of this car on UK websites, and it seems mostly OK. My only concern had been on recycling of battery after its useful life - I don't want to "save" one part of the environment by buying an EV and then despoil another with a spent battery.
