Very nice. I wont get into the sharpness, given your gear , but I like the vignette effect that highlights the contrast between the white birds and the surroundings.

Found out anything about the AF capabilities of the 200-500mm yet? The VR is great, and the lens is sharp, I am still not sure about AF for moving subjects. Will have to wait a while I guess for field tests to start trickling in. BRad Hill's comparative review should be interesting. The two shortlisted lenses for me are the Sigma S and this Nikon.

It was done in post.

I too am waiting for Brad Hill to return from his trip and his report/ blog post. The review by Nasim Mansurov is another, that I am looking forward to.
Meanwhile, look for any update here. He has got some quality images already.

Me too. While Sigma S gives me the additional sharp 100mm at the long end + weather sealing, it is the f5.6, colour/contrast rendition, [Edit: light weight compared against Sigma Sports] and the VR tilting towards the Nikkor.

Nice shot. If the focus had been there on the tiger's eyes, it would have been even better

Mansurov - not too keen on his wildlife credentials. There are a couple of others on his site who are very good. Now if only Richard Peters, David Lloyd et al would write a review :-). But they are too busy doing their stuff.

Best way to decide: rent the lens and play with it for a couple of days. Unfortunately, it takes months/years before even the leading rental cos such as Toehold get hold of a new lens, especially a Nikon one. Canon is more popular :-(

The main issue with the Sigma - weight and front heavy. I used the 300mm f/2.8 with a TC for a few days. Same weight. A pain reacting fast, or carrying for a long time (e.g. when walking).

I am in no hurry this time around, especially with such a disastrous launch of Nikon 200-500 f5.6 with already a service advisory to fix an AF issue.
I have been following the development, after Nikon has made the official announcement/launch of this lens, but was put off by its unavailability. Also many reviews/beta-tests by certain binge shoppers reported some AF related trouble for BIF kind of shots.

The weight of Sigma S is definitely a put off for me, as I shoot wildlife handheld all the time. I love the colour and contrast of the Nikkor than the Sigma [ based on the the pictures available so far]. The pictures from my copy of Tammy looked dull = lot of PP job. I am fine with 500 mm reach. Even at 700mm [with TC 14E ], the picture look decent. The image comparison with 200-400 F4 is more interesting.

Now, time for a picture. This one, a crop from an image captured near Chinnar Forest area.

Thanks.
Guess, it would have made a bit more sense to crop the picture so that the sky is less imposing. I am just learning, you see
