After reading the recent reverse lens posts, I tried it, with my 18-70mm Kit lens. It provides almost 1:1 magnification on the sensor!

Even though I have a camera body cap and the 55-62mm filter ring, I didn't try gluing the cap and the ring together to attach the lens. I clicked it keeping the lens close to the lens opening in the camera body (by hand) and I used a plastic piece for opening up the aperture. Very difficult to get a steady shot.

You don't have to glue it, you can get reverse lens adapters.

Landscapes and shallow dof rarely works as you rightly pointed out, so forget about B&W.
Well, the picture you referred to in the first place was a portrait, with a scape behind..here is a similar one, where i feel the DOF works well with B&W. Rules are made to be broken, especially in photography.

TG, That's a masterpiece. The sky, the barbed wire fence, the perspective everything adds to the beauty. Do you have a color version of this picture? If yes, I'd love to see that too.

Naahh.. Blurry landscape with BW doesn't work me. Great composition, but I feel the color version would look better.

Few more macros from the reversed lens set-up with the 18-70mm. Lighting was from the LED torch light of my cell phone. The pics are not cropped significantly - surely the magnification on the sensor was more than 1:1, may be it is close to 5:4 (image size:subject size)

The DOF is too shallow - its only about 1 mm or less. Could not reduce the aperture because there was not enough light.

@Samurai: Reverse lens adapter may be easy to get for Canikons... but it will be really difficult to procure accessories like that for the Alpha.

Which camera do you have? From where are you getting the reverse mount? Need to see if I can get something similar for Sony Alpha..

I have been clicking reverse lens since past 2 years and was in a thought that DOF cannot be
controlled in the method.

Image no 5 is of the pixels of my laptop screen. Clicked this using a 70-300(Normaly mounted) and 18-55mm)reversd)

You can create one at home using camera body cap(remember you cant use it as body cap anymore) and cheap UV filter.

Here is the one I have created for myself
Last image is of the adapter I have use to click the pixels of the monitor and LCD. I have pasted 2 UV filters face to face.

Let me know if you need more info on how I made them.

Actually, you might be having a point there, I guess I am not yet quite there to rightly decipher your thoughts or I just perceive things a little different. After all we all "see" different things right?

Insane macros, but I would say that once you get over the super macro fascination...try experimenting with composition. Macros need some serious composition(infact any picture, but macros all the more) to leave a lasting impression. Let the image tell us a story. All the best!

PS: YOur macro shots are urging me to look out for a macro lens now

@guyonblackybx: Thanks for the tip.. I need to get another body cap and a filter ring before I do that. I have a body cap, a Hoya UV filter and a 55-62mm coverter ring, but those are good quality stuff (made in Japan!) and I don't feel like tampering them. Need to buy a cheap filter for this.

I think laptop screen will be one of the first things anyone would shoot with the new marco setup, as I also had the same shot like you have posted here... The letters 'ick' from the "Quick launch" toolbar's caption, as it appears in the laptop screen, from the macro world:



@TG: Thanks, Yeah I know, there was no composition thought at all when I clicked these. It was so difficult to even get the stuff in focus with the narrow DOF!

Awesome shots there and you are welcome. . Third shot is my favorite, just wish the drop was in focus and it would have been a killer.

Somehow I am not very comfortable with the idea of reverse lens technique. So, I am planning to invest in extension tubes before I can get my hands on a 100mm macro lens.

I have Nikon D90.
Getting the reverse mount ring from the US. Getting it through one of friend.
It is not locally available.
