Well, you're right! There isnt a tree anywhere near Pangong. But as I mentioned this isnt a Photoshop trick, but neither is it a real tree

After the 3 idiots fame, the lake has been getting a popular shooting location tag I guess. This tree was "planted" there by some telegu production house for a shooting. Now, I wonder why they'd want a tree at Pangong. May be it was for some classic love song where they usually dance around trees

I think I have a shot where they've taken down the tree as well. It was a matter of mins for them to pull it down and take it off in a jeep.

Beautiful shot amolpol.
Thanks Navin! In your first shot, the whites are blown out in the sky on the right side. May be you can try and recover these.

Thanks for your suggestion Amolpol. I did try a 100% recovery in LR and got this. The flares became more evident though. But I think I like both.

For once, I wish the highway to Leh doesnt get done, else it will soon become highway to "heL"! The first time I went in 2007, it was so peaceful and clean at Pangong. When I went last year, I could see Lays and Kurkure packets thrown around. Add to that some crazy tourists who had come to see the 3 idiots shooting location rather than admire the lake.

Anyways, here's another shot at the lake which I like. It has my ride in it but thats not what I'm trying to show here, so it should qualify for a non-auto image.

Navin, here's a try at your picture. I've tried to recover it a bit and then cropped it to take the burnt highlights out. Hope you wont mind the changes, especially your name tag getting cut.

For the flares, you could have tried using your hand to get ride of some. Its quite a task to work with flares in the scene.

Thanks for the edit Amolpol. I feel the clouds look more greyish now than before. I preferred a glowing white cloud rather.

I use a Sigma 12-24 - the "Popeye" lens, so with its bulged front element I couldn't get my hand to block anything without getting into the frame. I'm also left with very little options to use filters for other creative effects. Kind of learning to get the flares to look interesting without spoiling the image.

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

@amolpol: Awesome shot! Love it. I am a bit saddened to hear about the degradation in the beauty of the place.

@kpzen: Lovely. What is the setup that you used?

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

I was in New York City over the weekend and I fell in love with it. There's something about it that makes me wanna go back. I will go there very soon, but for now here are two photographs.

Both were shot with a Panasonic G1 + 20mm f1.7. I had actually put up the entire micro four thirds system that I had built, but luckily there were no buyers. This combination is so light and versatile that it makes me want to carry it everywhere. I could slide the G1 and 20mm through the grills and keep it on a support (with the strap tightly wound around my arm) to get the skyline view, which otherwise might have been very difficult for me to get.

EDIT: The first one was a 10 second exposure and I agree the highlights should have been controlled :(

@Amolpol, those are really amazing shot of Pangong. What an awesome color to the lake.
@Hellwrath,man, those are nice photographs. Love that 2nd shot more.
@kpzen, great splash shot. Have you tried even faster shutter speed? Mind sharing the technique?

Re: The Official non-auto Image thread

Here is a snap of Lotus temple. Was gone to visit Maa Kaalka devi temple. Weather was good so thought of having a walk there too.

PS - Please note that this is highly compressed image. The original image size is over 4 MB, I reduced it to just 270 KB for uploading. Hence the quality is suffering.
