That's frankly a no-changer. I've shot 8k images with my SLR and not even one video. Yes it is important, but its not that big a step that it'll move mass volumes. Some special enthusiasts - yes!

At wide open, it will make not different, but with lens stopped down(to lets say F8) you will see viewfinder getting darker, and you will see what actually be in focus at that F-stop.
To see exactly how this works, put the 50mm 1.8 lens set to F8 and focus on close object(half click)
you will see background blurred, then press DOF preview button, and you will see viewfinder getting dark, and background more in focus!

The entry level Sony A100 had the DOF preview feature but they didn't carry that feature to the newer models... Don't know why.

Yea if you are using the max aperture to shoot it makes no difference as the lens is always wide open while mounted..

Live-view makes little sense without a tilting or rotating LCD screen.

I have not had good experience with Tamron (70-300 was much slower than it's Nikon counterpart) or Sigma (30/1.4 had soft focus) however if Tokina might be an option (really wish they had HSM versions of their ATX-Pro lenses).

The 50/1.8 is supposed to be a nice lens (not used it) but the 35/2 might offer you a more useable range on a APS-C sensor and can be supplemented by a 85/1.8 for potrait use (on either sensor).

The 50 1.8 is very very cheap so buy it no matter what. the 50 1.4 can then be avoided though I prefer my 50 1.4 over the 1.8. The 17-55 Nikon is the best always-on-the-camera lens that you can get for your D300 but its DX and I wouldn't be comfortable spending that kind of money on a DX lens, especially with the new Nikon 16-35 F4 launched recently at its price point. So better bet is to look out for a good sample of the Sigma or the Tamron 17-50 2.8 which is as good as the Nikon optically.

It is cheap in price but not cheap in quality. It costs so less, since irrespective of brand, it is one lens which is sold most. Economy of scale at work.

Atlast I am successful in confirming the order of my Nikon 35mm 1.8G AF-S DX from bhphotovideo.com at $200, shipping (UPS worldwide saver) for $61. Hope to receive it maximum by weekend. Wish it saves me some duty money when it reaches. Somewhere I read 'low value' packs that are costing less than 10k not charged duty. I will have my personal input to that idea by this weekend.
