One needs to be really careful here. A run of the mill filter will pull down the picture quality.

Polarizing filter (indispensable in outdoor landscape shots)
Not indispensable but good to have.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Hey guys, I have long been wondering whether to buy a DSLR. Finally, the Vitamin M is with me now and with my new ride coming up I want a good camera to take some pics of it and also a replacement for my simple old P&S. Since I am new to photography I am thinking of going with the Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm lens. With a budget of 35k, the options I have are the Nikon D3100, D5000 and from the Canon system the EOS 500D and 550D (can stretch my budget 2k for the 550D if it good.) Now according to DxOMark the D3100 has the best sensor of the lot. So, I am planning to go ahead with it. However, will the camera be good enough if I grow in photography quickly? Because investing the D3100's body now and then changing the body to a higher model within a span of say 5-6 months is not really going to be light on the pocket, especially with various other commitments. What are your suggestions?

Thanks. I see lot more adds now for 550D in the same price range in eBay. Price starts from 30,500 for body only to different higher prices for various combination of lenses. So the price drop has happened which is a good news.

Re: The DSLR Thread

As per Canon's website, the 550D is now just 2k more than the 500D. Just a month back, the price difference was 10k!

Interesting use of DSLR...

5 Canon 5D Cameras were used to shoot a feature film in natural lights. This movie was made by Ram Gopal Verma and cost was just 6.5 lakh.

How RGV shot Dongala Muta in five days - Rediff.com Movies

Black swan which found nomination for Oscars also had many scenes shot using Canon 7D , 1D Mark 4 and ballet scenes were using Canon 5D MK2.

But full film using Canon 5D MK2 seems to be first in Indian cenema

I think House MD season finale of season 6 was shot with the 5D mark II highly visible in the very low dof shots of House as well as cuddy and the difficulty in keeping the sceen in focus was very visible.

Re: 550D 18-135 kit + 50 f1.8

I am currently getting the 550D with 18-135 kit + 50mm f1.8 for 57K total (non-grey from auth dealer - name listed on Canon India website). Is this deal good, or do you think I can get better in Delhi?

Funnily, other canon sellers (claiming to be auth dealers but their names dont fare on canon india site - however will issue bill etc and give proper warranty) are giving both of the above for 55K.

Dont know what to do. can anyone guide me pls?

Thanks & regards.

A 550D body is 34K, 50mm f1.8 is 5k. So you are paying 18K for 18-135 as part of kit. You can buy a 18-55 and 55-250 for that money unless of-course you NEED to have a walk around zoom lens!! BTW, did you check for 18-200 as well as kit lens??
