Re: The DSLR Thread

Ragul,

The lens you want for the D5100 is the Nikon 18-200mm DX VR. The 28-300 makes no sense on a D5100 - the reason being, as others have said, the D5100 uses a sensor that is smaller than what a 35mm film negative used to be, this causes all lenses on DX bodies (that's what the cropped sensor bodies are called by Nikon) to magnify the image by a factor of 1.5. That effectively makes the 28-300mm, a 42-450mm lens. That's great if you want more reach at the long end but terrible if you want to go wide. This also explains why full-frame bodies (called FX by Nikon - same size sensor as 35mm film) have no change in magnification and hence a 28mm stays a 28mm.

To get around this problem for DX bodies, Nikon makes lenses specifically for them. The 18-200 DX VR is one such lens that gives you the equivalent angle of view of 27-300mm. That is the do-it-all lens for the D5100 that you want. And its cheaper - 49k official in India.

Ragul,

Star scream has pretty much said it - the 18-200 is a far more affordable/practical option. Kindly do note that you will anyways not be able to take those kinda carvings' snaps to utmost perfection unless you possess a low light bazooka like the 300 f2.8 or such

T.
There is no magnification. The image gets cropped.

Absolutely good advice. The 18-200 is about 45K and a far better option on DX. Unless you are aiming to FX some day. There's no harm in using a FX lens on a DX body. But FX body with a DX lens is no good, it crops the image, turning a 12MP D700 into a ~8MP camera.

8 MP was still good but its much lower than that. Quoting from Kenrockwell: "The D700 is only a 5MP camera with a DX lens, because it only uses the middle of the sensor. It's silly to use DX lenses on the D700; even the D40 has more resolution (6MP) with DX lenses than either the D700 or D3."

5MP is horrible...and I stand corrected.

Thanks guys. I got Vivitar Series 1 90mm f2.5 macro lens (Minolta mount) and Lester Dine 105mm f2.8 macro lens. Vivitar is supposed to be one of the sharpest lenses ever made and Lester Dine has a cult following for it's contrast and sharpness.

I have also added Olympus OM 50mm f1.8+25,14,14,7mm extension tubes and a Canon FD 200mm f2.8 IF.

All of these for the G1, ah, gotta love the micro four thirds system .

Congrats buddy !! Waiting to see some master pieces.

I too got my extension tubes today (9mm, 16mm & 30mm) from eBay HK for around US$7 and a set of diffusers for SB600 flash (blue, yellow & white) that's US$4. Tubes are metal and black powder coated, hope to explore it next weekend as I am travelling tonight for 3 days.

Diffuser set is good quality plastic, but sadly not the correct size of SB600, it is lose and require a sellotape to stay firm. I played with the white piece, trying to make the slot bit wider with a cutter, then tried heating a screw driver and melting a portion, then cut it into a tiny piece with a kitchen scissor, now it has become a useless piece of plastic (only the white ).

Re: The DSLR Thread

Hi Friends,

I am looking for a DSLR and my budget is around 25-40K (Planning to get it next month). I am eying on Canon and Nikon brands only.

Please suggest me the best package available at this price point.

Also advise me that from where I should make the purchase; JJmehta, official site, reseller, croma or any other?

Nikon D5100/Canon 550D. Scout around to find some deals. Also a lot of people have bought online, flip back a few pages to read more about them. Personally, I wouldn't be comfortable buying stuff above a couple of hundred bucks online. Not when I am plonking 40k.

Same with me.
I am interested in only Nikon and was quoted these rates today (local dealer):
D3000 - 22,500
D3100 - 27,000
D5100 - 37,000

Compared to rates on the internet the above are cheaper.
My mind wants the 3100 but my heart yearns for the 5100 (3000 is an old model).

I am also considering the Sony Nex-3.

Re: The DSLR Thread

@manim - if you are on a budget, go for the D3100, and spend the extra on a good lens (like a 50mm f1.8 or a 18-200 or 55-300 depending on what you like). Your pics would be drastically improved with a good lens.

Not that D5100 is bad. I bought it myself a month ago (it was 34500 on HuddlenDeal then, now increased to 37K). Loving the cam!

Some of the older lens might not focus on these cams. Others can tell you which those are, I, for one, remember the D5000. Shaju,R2D2 and others, which of these don't support auto focus?
