The DSLR Thread
(

Without breaking the momentum of some ongoing discusssons, may I start mine?
I have been living without a tripod so far, but now I think the time has come to think about one. Having never thought about one, I don't know what to look for. Any pointers on the type (screw/clip, metal/fibre), make etc. would help. I live outside India right now so no need for store recommendations unless you want to tell me about great dealers in Australia (C300?). My budget would be below AUD 200 if that is good enough.
Secondly, along with a tripod, a remote release for my D7000 would be nice. Does this come with different options too?
Adding as an afterthought: I don't use heavy lenses - the 70-300 VRII is my heaviest so you know what I mean. I don't intend to buy more lenses in the near future.
I got a new D3100. Still learning the basics.
Any idea on how to prevent misting on the lens when leaving an A/C room?
I was scared that my lens had conked.

May I know the price you paid for 3100. Any freebies that you have got with this? I am also planning to buy one.
Regards
Ok even I have joined the DSLR bandwagon, got the Nikon D3100.
A few noob queries.
1) Are uv filters necessary,if required which one to get.
2) Lens hood-bit confused should go for uv filters or hood or get both.
3) Which cleaning kit to get.
4) Good budget DSLR backpacks or sling bags
P.S Links will be appreciated :)

1) Get the Hoya filters. The filters also act as protection for the lens. If by chance you happen to scratch the front element, you can throw away the filter and get a new one. You can't throw away your lens if its scratched:D.
2)I prefer using the lens hood. It helps reduce the glare at times. Keep in mind to remove the hood when you fire flash, else you will have vignetting effect.
3) Any kit will do. You will mostly need a blower and a brush and a lens cleaning tissue.
4)Try out a few bags and decide for yourself. If you have no intention of adding any lens in near future, get the basic, it will accommodate a DSLR and an additional lens. Try Lowepro/Tamrac. These are really good quality bags. If you don't want to spend so much on bags, get the bags sold by Nikon.

Jumbo Electronics or Joshi's shop (don't know the exact name, it's next to the lift / atrium which is close to the Canon showroom) at TGIP Mall, Noida
I use my Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens once a week. Recently when i opened the lens case, i was surprised to see fungus on the outer side of the lens. Being on the outer side i cleaned it off with a lens pen. Lucky the fungus hasn't itched the lens. I keep my SLR packed with silica gel but i do keep the SLR inside a closed almira though. Is this the reason?
Hi guys, the SLR bug has not spared me as well and am in the process of getting one for myself and the first question rises, which brand :(
whats the difference between a canon and nikon brands ?
Which is a better camera to buy and why does i see everyone holding a canon either in the movies or on TV's :)
Hope i have not asked the same question for the N'th time

You have asked the same Q n power Nth time:). Both are equally good.
Pick from either of the stable. Generally, Canon lens are cheaper compared to Nikon. What is your budget? What sort of photography do you intend to do?

Photography type is a question mark now just random clicks with some close up wildlife shots |
For 50k, you can consider Canon 550D,Canon 600D (tilt screen),Nikon D5100 and Nikon D90.
If you are serious about wild life you need to get at least a 300mm lens. Else the kit lens will suffice for most.
I bought a D90 and spent a good 60k on it, itching for the 70-300VR but no money at presentlol:. So, you might want to consider a lower end body to spare cash for the lens!

Hi,
Buy the Hoya filters . . . Expensive but worth it. You wouldn't want the cheap UV filter glass to spoil the snaps of the costly lens . . . Do you ?
Cleaning kits made by Vangaurd are very good . . . especially the 3-in-1 cleaner. Costs about rs. 900 /- or so.
W.r.t D-SLR bags: Check out the Lowepro at
www.lowepro.com and see the Sling Shot 302 AW. It's an awesome bag. Or as an alternative you can also look at Flipside 300 series.
Check flipkart or other sites for the best deals.
Hope the above information helps.

+1
I have Hoya Skylight 1B filter and a Hoya CPL. Both are excellent products, but a bit more expensive than some of the budget ones.

Not as expensive as B&W.

These are supposed to be much better than normal Hoya Filters, primarily due to better glass and filter mounts. They are a part of the Schneider optics, who make some of the best medium and large format lenses.
