This would be around 16k. Much better deal. Effectively you are getting only 10K for your old D40x, isn't it?

Initially, I thought I can apply the coupons as you outlined above. But, when I spoke to customer care, they said ONLY one coupon can be applied

Meaning, when I accept the exchange on their website, it will generate a coupon worth Rs.14,190 which can be exchanged on MRP price. Therefore, i cannot use the NKD5100 coupon in this transaction.

I checked the price that i will tentatively get outside and its matching for Rs.11K and Rs.15K with lens. Now since my Nikon D40X kit lens is as good as useless without the autofocus, I am essentially getting the price just for the body.

Btw, camera review god, Kenrockwell rates D5100 way better than even a D90. Can this be true?

Its a good value you are getting. I'd say go for it.

And yes the D5100 is better than the D90. D90 is too old now. D5100 has better sensor (same as the one on D7000) and better focusing capabilities. The only plus D90 has over the D5100 is its build quality.

Heres a good article on present state of DX by Thom Hagen:
http://www.bythom.com/stateofdx2012.htm

This, and so many views from people here have swayed me away from the DSLRs!!! Now I am looking at the mirrorless system!

Thanks for the link. Very interesting read indeed. However, that will not sway my decision to buy the D5100 as in my little photography knowledge Ken Rockwell's view matters more than this gentleman

With regards to mirrorless, I am sure the future is in them But, as we all know new technology will be scaringly expensive in the initial days. So I dont expect them to be full fledge replacing the DX in next 2-3 years and even if they do it would be used by professionals/serious amateurs etc
For an amateur who takes pictures only for the joy of taking it and dont plan to make this a serious hobby, D5100 kind of fits right in.

I am now in a dilemma on the prime lens.

Nikon 50mm F1.8/D OR Nikkon 35mm F 1.8? and whether both can work on D5100?

Which one of above is better? 50mm is 6K I think and 35mm is 12K.

Is that 35mm worth double the price? If yes, what it can do that 50mm cannot?

In the manual mode, you're basically telling the camera to stop metering for you because you want to dial in the ISO/Shutter/F-stop which are the three building blocks of photography. Hence, there is no question about having exposure compensation available in the M mode.

I have found Exposure compensation to be invaluable in times of extreme. For example bright sunlight on the beach, even f12@1/8000 is not enough, either have to and get ND8 filters or dial in exposure compensation :D

1. Check which length is proper for you. 50mm goes a little bit in the Portrait Photography.
35mm is an All-rounder.

2. Check if D5100 comes with autofocus motor in the Body(I think it does not have it. D90 I guess has it.). If yes I think you can go for 6k lens. It does not matter if the lens has a built in auto focus motor or not. It will auto focus on a camera having in built auto focus motor.

3. I have a sneaking suspicion that 35mm 12k lens has a built in Auto focus motor. But I am not able to see it on Flipkart to verify.

Sir I think the 50mm for 6K is price for the AF lens and not the AFS lens. AF lense will not automatically focus on D5100. The AFS 50mm is around 18 if I am not wrong.

35 mm is lens designed specifically for DX cameras. 50 mm I think is an FX lens but can work on DX bodies also. The 35 mm on a DX body effectively work almost as a 50 mm only. I spoke to somebody with 50 mm lens on a DX body and he suggested me to buy 35 mm (I have not bought it yet). He said the on a DX body 50 mm becomes close to 70 mm that poses a big chalange shooting indoors.

As mentioned in previous post, 50/1.8 D will only work as a manual foces lens on camera bodies without motor (like 3100/3200/5100).

I would suggest you go for 35/1.8 AFS one. This has a buil-in motor to focus with the d5100 body. Further more, this will also be equivalent to a normal prime (i.e. 50mm equivalent on full frame) keeping the crop factor in mind.

Could you explain this a bit. How do you work around the max shutter speed of 1/8000s (or 1/4000s in some cameras) using exposure compensation without changing the aperture or ISO.

Nikon D lens wont work for 5100.
you will have to get the G lens.

This has probably been discussed but my search did not return any result. So please bear with me. A friend wants to buy a DSLR and use his old lenses. Specifically Nikkor AF 28-80 on Nikon 5100 or 3200. My short Google research shows that SLR lenses are mostly compatible with DSLR bodies. It talks mostly about how focal length will be affected, like telephoto will be more telephoto, or vice versa. However I believe view finder image will have different coverage than image falling on sensor. This is due to difference in sensor - film size. So it will convey misleading coverage. Is my opinion correct?

Btw, which of the two cameras is better D5100 or D3200 in sheer image quality?

Canon T4i (EOS 600D) going for 33,999 with 18-55 kit lens, cover and 4Gb card on Homeshop 18 Superdeals. This makes it 1k cheaper than Zoomin and 4 k more than the 550D.

Any chance I can get a better deal anywhere else?

Not about the deal - but have a look at what you gain over 550D in that price. (Only MP is not a good step up IMHO)
More Logical step up seems to be the 650D.
For head to head comparison - please have a look at snapsort (if you haven't already)
Just my 2 paisa - since I was pretty much trying to choose from the trio of Canon too!

Thanks for all your inputs. Yeah, now i understood that 50mm F/1.8D will work with Nikon D5100 but, wont autofocus ( so what's the point?)

Looks like I need to spend a lot more to get what others would most probably get for Rs.6000 for the 50mm as the 35mm/1.8 AF-S is Rs.14,000 but, have been reading rave reviews of the same.

That kind of sorts out my equipment for now. Next is to figure out if my Tamaron 70mm-300mm telephoto works on Nikon D5100 which again means need to check if Tamaron lens has autofocus motor in them or not.

@mobike008 trust me when I say this, its fun to use manual focusing especially on a prime like 50mm 1.8 you wont regret it and it would catapult your photography skills leagues above!! Own a 50mm for the love of photography. It demands respect and patience and thats the point. You grow with it and it shows in the output. Cheers!!

But that's way out of my budget. I think its currently retailing for 53k odd only for the body. This is my first DSLR. But for some reason, I did not want to start with a 1100D or the likes. So I decided to go for the Rebel.

Now the 4k is ok for me as its a newer model. stupid:

For now I was thinking of picking this up for less than 35 and adding a 55-250 later on completing the package in an even 50k.
