I havent bought the prime lens at the same time of ordering the camera as i am still confused between the below :-

Nikon 50mm AF-S 1.8/G vs. Nikon 35mm AF-S 1.8/G

Usage Pattern : I foresee this prime lens to become my "all purpose" lens due to its size, weight, all roundness ( even compared to kit lens).

+1 for 35/1.8 AFS. Equivalent to 50mm on 35mm format, hence a normal lens for the d5100 crop body. It shall be more of an all round lens as compared to the 50mm

Then it is the 35mm, simply because it has wider coverage than a 50mm, you'll need that especially while shooting people indoors.

Thanks. I was decided on 35mm and was just looking for some more folks vouching for it. Will wait for the camera and play around with it first and then order the 35mm in a week or two.

Plan to get 35mm before Diwali and hope to catch some fireworks shots with it.

wonderful clap:

If you plan to shoot fireworks then buy a tripod if you havent got that already. You will need some long exposures if want to capture some beautiful shots.

Good point. I do have a tripod and plan to use it for these pictures. Lets see how it comes:)

Canon 600D also has master mode flash on-board you can use a 480EX II
or YN468 II off-camera in TTL mode , Without this you need either a Canon ST2 or equivalent or Canon 580 EX II flash on cam to trigger off camera flash ( retaining ETTL2)

So for 4K rs for both flip out screen and on board master flash in 600D is good upgrade over 550D.

hmm, I had overlooked that feature ( master flash modes ).
But, anyway I went with the D5100 :)
I found a good leap - when thinking feature-wise - D3100 < D5100.

If you like the trade for 4k - Do go ahead and buy your cam soon!
Cheers.

Ace.

Is this what you were looking for?

No, I am referring to a site that plotted a curve graph for a chosen camera.

Hi Samurai
That is exactly what Dxomark website gives! Do go deeper for the respective cameras and into the measurement links. They do dynamic range measurements at different ISO and plot all the curves.

No, I finally found it. It was in the EVIL camera thread.

Oh okay, you wanted comparison on same graph. DXO gives you one camera on one graph. So side by side curves are difficult.
This site is good.
I notice that nikon cams have higher DR than canon

Exactly, this site let me compare OM-D DR with Canikon cameras. I am stunned to see that OM-D with 4/3 sensor beats most of the earlier fullframe Canon cameras. Only the fullframe 1DX, 5DMII & 5DMIII stay ahead of OM-D. And the OM-D is almost on par with Nikon D3. Who would have believed it couple years back, 4/3 providing same DR as fullframe D3.

But Nikon is the true king of DR.

Edit: Also notice that the list on the right is sorted by DR performance.

To be technically correct, its the sony sensor division which is working miracles here. Too bad, their DSLR/NEX division is fumbling.

Having shot with both 350D and D7000, I am constantly amazed how much detail I can pull through!

A couple of thoughts:
1. I don't think fireworks pictures will look any different at all taken with your 35 mm or with your kit lens. You'll be shooting stopped down with both lens anyway for the sake of maximizing depth of field as also to allow for even longer exposures. But I agree that lens will give you a few magical pictures on a Diwali night as long as you're shooting short exposure shots in low light - which your kit lens can't.
2. For fireworks shots, do buy a remote so you can comfortably use bulb exposure without holding on to the shutter button on your camera and inadvertently causing shake in the process.

Could some one suggest where i can get a Rain Cover for my Lowepro Fastpack 350? Its not the AW version, so it did not come with a rain cover. Any suggestions on where to order / get the rain cover for the model would be great.

few questions to fellow dSLR users:
  1. any disadvantages in buying lens from ebay.com or amazon
(planning for a nikon prime lens)
  2. is it advisable using UV filter while shooting.
  3. any special advantages using a battery grip or carrying an extra battery would suffice!
