I am glad that you could not stop yourself from posting.

So now it is the EPL1 + Kit lens (14 to 42) and an E3 followed by the 9-18mm F/4-5.6 at $700.

Now with the E3 do I need the kit lens(14 to 42mm) at all? and what is the E3 priced at? Also would the E3 & the 9-18 (any model no.) mount directly on to the camera or do I need an adaptor as mentioned in HellwratH's response.

Samurai, yes a pit indeed and it seems I am dragging you along for the ride a second time around.

Why do you want to both EPL1 and E3? The recommended main lens for E3 is 12-60mm, the pro models don't come kit lenses. I bought the E3 at $1700, now it is available at $1000 on Amazon.com, for Olympus is notorious for dropping prices drastically after a year. Really drives early buyers crazy.

Samurai,

My mistake, I thought the E3 is the designation for the lens that you mentioned alongside. OK, So the choices are EPL1 + kit lens OR the E3 + the 12~60 mm lens. Just saw the E3 and the lens on the Olympus web site. This is a big camera and beats my initial requirement of a small body.

Since I am only looking to have a leisurely swim before jumping in at the deep end, I am going to go in for the EPL1 camera with the kit lens for now and in an years time if I am still carrying it around with me (read using it enough), I will gladly dole out the $3~4K odd for the E3 + the 12~60 mm and the 9~18 mm too along with any other required accessories.

Trust that I will continue to benefit from your continued inputs.

Very nice picture.

I have always been using a normal digital camera (right now its a cybershot). I had a Canon SLR (the old film-based model) which I have not been using for ages (the last snap the poor thing must have taken would have been 10 years back!!) The SLR is with a complete set of lenses.

Is it possible to use the same set of lenses on a DSLR?

I am not keen to invest too much money into a DSLR. So how much would a basic set cost for an amateur? And what should be the ideal specs? (mind you I am a baby as far as photography is concerned )

E3 is indeed a heavy camera, I bought it because I wanted a weather proof camera gear for offroad photography. You may never have to buy it, the EVIL camera might give you all you want.

You can use the 12-60mm with EPL1 too. So focus on EPL1 + kit lens and may be m4/3 9-18mm. But these are not weather-proof though.

PLEASE HELP!

I am looking to buy my DSLR (Finally, finance is arranged somewhat!!!). Problem is, I have a maximum budget of around 40k, and i am not sure what would be the best way to spend it. Please help with your suggestions.

Current Equipment-

Canon Powershot S5IS.

Requirements

General photography
Cars & bikes.
Landscapes.
Macro (Possible in this budget? I doubt it! Will have to use the S5IS for that, i suppose! ).
Next upgrade will be after 2 years. Hence, i need to hang on to these equipments only for the next 2 years!

(My flickr link- Favourites - a set on Flickr )

Choices.

1. Canon 550D kit.

Would love to get one! I can imagine how it would feel in my hands. Problem is, it is absolutely at the edge of my budget, and i wont be able to buy any other lenses!

2. Canon 450D + Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.

450D is old. I know its down on specs as well. But i think its better in IQ than the 500D that replaced it? With the 18-135IS, i get a lens which would be much better at handling everyday situations.

3. Canon 1000D + Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Lens + Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

I get a lens that is good for potraits + a 'good' zoom lens. Or should i get the 18-55 IS instead of the 50mm? (kit lens is non- IS).

4. Canon 1000D + Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens.

Easy to use, and covers most situations.

5. Nikons- Prefer canon since i have one AND mainly because they dont sport in-built motors. But open to buying them, if they are a better deal. Not going outside canikon. (Better brands may be there, but playing safe!)

Is option 2 better, or am I stupid in considering the old 450D?
Decided on Canon 1000D + kit lens 18-55 + Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Lens + Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS + Tripod + 8gb card + bag.

Need suggestions on a few things.
  • Should i change the kit lens 18-55 to 18-55 IS lens? Since i have 50mm as well?
  • Good tripod within 2k?
  • Is 4GB enough for 1000D, or 8GB is needed? Please suggest a good card.
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes. the IS is a much better lens
2. under 2K (aka $50) maybe a Velbon, Vanguard or SunPak
3. 8GB Extreme III is what I use on my 40D.

Yet to see the review link you've posted. But this is my general feedback on pentax as I've been using Pentax since last 15 years!
thanks a ton for the words sir.. would definitely go for the pentax then

1. OK. IS it is then. Hope the whole stuff wont exceed 40k by much. Here is my expectation-
Canon 1000D kit- 21k.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Lens - 5k.
Canon EF-S 55-250mm IS Lens- 11k.
Vanguard tripod- 2.2k.
National geographic bag- 1k.

8GB Extreme III - ?
18-55 IS in exchange for kit lens- ?

Yes Fillmore.

Have some accesories added though. Sonia close up lenses, Hoya circular polarizer + UV filter. And the good old roll film case (?) as flash diffuser.

Hello All,

I am finally contemplating the idea of buying a DSLR. I am not a hobbyist, I shoot at family functions and also vacations, few pics taken here and there when an opportunity strikes. I want to get a good camera that will last me a few years, even if the hobbyist in me wakes up. I am currently using a Canon SX110 IS. My options here in Germany are as follows.

1. Nikon D3000 Fatbox Kit + Nikkor 18–55 mm 1:3,5–5,6 G AF-S DX VR Zoom for €333. Also included original Nikon Camera Bag and 2GB Nikon SD card.

2. Canon EOS 1000D with Canon 18-55 and Canon 75-300 lens for €449

3. Canon EOS 450D with Canon 18-55 and Canon 75-300 lens for €599

4. Nikon D3000 kit + DX18-55 and 55-200 lens for €399

5. D 5000 Body + Tamron AF 18–200mm F/3,5–6,3 XR Di II LD Aspherical [IF] MACRO Lens for €555

6. Pentax k-x with kit lens for around €550

I am not willing to spend more than €550 for now. The Nikon D3000 offer (first option) is very tempting, but I am not sure if I would end up with less gear later (like missing the Live View). I am looking for a single lens to take care of most of my shooting situations. Because of this reason I am keen on the D5000 with the Tamron lens. Both have not so bad reviews. Would this be a wise choice?

Can someone comment on whether the Pentax is worth all the hype heard about it in the US market? If so I can now buy it with the kit lens and buy another all purpose (almost) lens later.

I also want to know that discarding the cheaper D3000 and the 1000D are wise options. Or else could I buy the 1000D body only and then buy the Canon 18-200 lens. Would the 1000D take care of most of my photo needs, even though I would miss the video mode.

Requesting the gurus to please advise. Thanks in advance
