I am planning to buy Canon EOS 500D along with a telephoto lens from US. Can you please suggest your opinion on this camera as well the lens below,

1) Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens
2) Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom

Which one will the better buy?

i am looking for dof/hyperfocal distance calculator that i can use on a mobile device. looking for an application that works on either apple, palm or windows mobile devices. i had downloaded winmodof (windows mobile) but it kind of hangs during use and then i end up rebooting windows mobile device.

would appreciate inputs.

55-250 IS is definitely better than the 75-300.

I used to use DOF calculator on an iPhone. I think it's a free application, look around and you will find it.

@funda2max, without any hesitation go for Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS. Its one of the best available.

these are the things i bought!

pentax k-x with 18-55 lens
50-200 telephoto lens
tripod and guerrilla pod with camera bag
a sanyo rechargable battery kit

all for 35k which is a good deal i suppose

others - check out the deals on D3000 body - going for 15k (1mth). not bad at all!

I have picked up a Canon 70-200 EF f4 from the US for USD 1130. The best quote i got here was 63k which is a good 10k higher. I am waiting to arrive with my uncle next week and the only thing which is bothering me right now is the customs guys. hoping there is not going to be any trouble getting it past them. I would update the forum once i get it in my hand !

If you are hand carrying the item you should be fine with customs.

How necessary it is to have AF motor in lens or body? I have a D60 and would like add Nikon 50mm 1.8 prime. Neither D60 nor AF 50 mm 1.8D has AF motor hence thinking if to buy or not! There is 35mm 1.4 AF-S for approx 14K INR, that’s quite expensive for me

Anyone using this Manual focus lens ever found an absolute need for Auto focus? Can we easily focus with this manual lens
or it requires lot of practice to master the manual focus!

You can almost forget about action shots and most of the candid shots with a MF lens. You better buy used MF lens instead of spending on a new MF lens. There are gems you can lay your hands on.

If it is 35mm and f1.4, pick it up even if it is expensive.(as the say - "beg, borrow or steal")

I use a old film rangefinder camera. I never faced any problem in focusing till few days ago for my childhood buddy's wedding. Either I missed lot of candid shots or got blurred pics due to manual focusing!!!.
As I said earlier, you have to forget action shots.

BTW, on a cropped body like D60, some practice is required and I hope there is no metal frame resting on your nose!!!

It is absolutely nonsence not to have AF. I have clicked around 100s of photo of my recent trip to Italy with manual focus, to save the battery because I was running out of battery and it was all blured even with tripod.
