yeah!! me too was about to suggest the D7000!! But....., your subsequent lines made me think about D3100. Why spend big bucks if you can get the work done by a camera which is half the price of D7000?? You can also look at the D90 which is in the middle ground!! An added advantage about the D90 is it can auto-focus with certain relatively newer nikon lenses which the D3100 can't do!!!

Prices(body only) as per Nikon India website:
D7000 - 74,450/-
D90 - 43,450/-
D5000 - 31,950/- (just in-case you want a model higher than the D3100)
D3100 - 27,250/- (if you use a hand held meter and willing to focus manually)
D3000 - 24,950/- (I heard this model isnt good, but its hearsay!!)

Note:
1. As per the Nikon website, the prices include a D-SLR Bag & 4GB SD Card as freebees.
2. The street prices may be less.
3. Prices in the grey market may be even lesser!!

( big ego of mine thinks it can out think a cam, used to it, dad used to use a light meter if he was unsure, never used the inbuilt cam meter, Ofcourse he is an established wildlife photographer, has his work published! and all I have is one pic published as a cover years back ) ).........

Re: The DSLR Thread

@kkr2k2, the prices of the D90 have gone up. I was enquiring and apparently the demand has gone up after the introduction of the D7000. JJMehta has low prices on the website but last I called they did not have stocks.

About the D3000, I have heard too that it is nowhere near the D3100 or even the 1000D. I think it is too basic to be a DSLR. The D3100 is closer to the D5000 apparently, but sadly does not have AE bracketing. I think your suggestion of the D3100 is the best though as the OP has a predilection for manual photography.

Buy Canon EF-S body you can use all your Pentax + Nikkor + Many more using mount adapters with AF confirm adapters ( except FD and Minolta MD mounts) , If you are ok with EVIL buy Sony NEX

Guys Yesterday I got my second M42-EOS adapter purchased for 17$ total and this one is quite an improvement over what I got last year.

Now I can set the Apurture value on the body to the same value I set using the aperture ring ( of course manually) so exif information is correct.

Few months back this kind of AF adapter was costing a bomb.

2nd std is really early , I respect generocity of your father because that was an age when Camera was really expensive equipment.
I got Canon Demi half frame when I was in 7th Std and learnt manual controls, For many years I really thought that is the best camera in the world becuase it can make 72 photos from an expensive film while others can create only 35

Just like you after college days I was lost in auto P&S world for around a decade

Not to that extent. Yet. It is just that the D7000 is a huge step up; in price. I am targeting this camera as stated earlier, but I am really scared it will go off the market soon and I am not in a position to buy one immediately. You are lucky to have one.

If you are on Windows, there is a way to get CS4 running in both (or three, or n number of PCs) PCs at the same time with your key.

Deactivate from PC1, and before activating in PC2,

Edit the file in PC2

\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts to include

Quote:
127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 practivate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 3dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-2.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 adobe-dns-3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 ereg.wip3.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sea.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 wwis-dubc1-vip60.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate-sjc0.adobe.com
this much, and then activate on PC2.

Then do the same editing in PC1 and activate there as well. Voila! You will get two of them working at the same time. We are not cracking or not even changing any settings in the software at all, but just preventing Windows from communicating with Adobe activation servers.

Doing this is much safer because if your key ever leaks out, both installations of CS4 are gonna refuse the key when you try to activate it next time.

Damn!!! How did I forget this one? Yes you can go for the Canon DSLRs too. But I would suggest 450D or 500D or a 550D(I think you can change to a brighter split screen in the 550D for easier manual focusing).

I heard there are some issues with the NEX series while the MFT is more suitable to mount any type of lens.

lolx............ you can!!!
Option(1)
Sell your D90, buy a large format camera, make good pics, sell those pics and fund your way to a 5D Mark II!!!
Option(2)
Sell your D90, apply for a loan, keep the sale proceedings for the down payment and buy the 5D Mark II.

Note: pun intended!!!

Ah!!! you made me recollect some plastic camera my cousin used in early 90's and others used to envy it as it was capable of 72 frames while we ordinary mortals could only squeeze out 37 frames out of yashicas, ricohs, etc!!!

Now after years into digital photography, bought a Olympus Pen EE-3 just for the heck of it. But I use it as a back-up camera when I run out of battery!!!

I was suggesting NEX to someone.. but after reading this I feel I should make him aware of the issues as well. Care to put more light on what kind of issues are there with NEX?

Nothing major other than General lag in UI.

Well what read is from the internet. I have seen many complain about the difficulty in removing the nikkor lens adapter and lack of many options of adapters. Some complained about the mis-match of the focus scale with respect to actual distances. Other complaint is that for the heavy lenses the camera becomes front heavy(of course this is also present in the MFT cameras too!!)

I don't think difficulty in using a third party lens adapter in a camera can be seen as an issue with the camera itself.
