You are mixing dslr with super zooms. I am confused. Agreed they fall in same price range but cater to totally different taste

If zoom is your priority go for lower two. If you are interested in serious photography choose dslr but you will need different lens

Congratulations Behemoth. TBHP's first owner of the D600. WOuld look forward to the pictures shot from this machine.

Now that you've a FX cam, I would suggest you to hive off the 70-300 and get a 80-200 f/2.8 instead. You shall never regret this.

My lens collection so far consists of 24-85 f2.8-4, 50mm f1.8D, and 70-300 f4.5-5.6VR (all FX ) - slowly building on it, though I am not going for the higher 2.8 fixed aperture lenses yet.

I was feeling quite handicapped with the D90 due to the lack of low lighting capabilities and that's the reason which triggered the change.
I have a feeling that the D600 will be very close to the D800 in terms of ISO capabilities and could actually even be better as the MicroPixel sites are actually bigger.

Actually the dealer even had the D600 body only pack also in stock, but he gave it this way instead. The difference in the Mrp of the D600 with and without lens is 28k but the Mrp of the lens standalone is 34k. So when he split the kit he would probably save 2-3k and passed on the benefit partially to me, giving me the d600 without lens at 1.25.

In terms of size and weight, it is very similar to the D7000 which is a good thing as it is lighter and smaller than the D800.

GDji, thanks for the suggestion on the 80-200 lens, it is certainly very goodand on my radar, but I will probably add it later. I am also looking for a good wide angle lens. Can you please suggest some good options?

I took the body only (I already have a 24-85, f2.8) and the dealer kept the lens from the kit box , as it saves them a bit more this way.

IMO, its an excellent strategy from Nikon. Crop users can move to FX without breaking the bank.

Yes, will start taking pics with the D600 soon! My busy schedule is really killing these days and I am desperately trying to take a break to get back to photography.
We are planning a long weekend to Dhanaulti-Kanatal from Sep-29-Oct-1st, so I will get a chance at photographing some nice landscapes there.
Will definitely share the pics on the non-auto image thread.

I am quite keen to see how the D600 fares in night time photography, as that was the biggest challenge for the D90.

The 24-85 (f2.8-3.5) is a general purpose lens useful for family events and portraits. On DX bodies, due to the 1.5 crop factor, it is virtually a 36-127mm lens. In this range, you will not be able to take a few wide angle shots, for example of landscapes, large groups of people. But it is ultra sharp and also wide (at 24mm f2.8) and is very good in colour rendition. There is a bit of distortion, but nothing really bad. It is also among the few lenses which are still made in Japan and are very good quality.
This lens is a non-VR version, so you need to compensate for that with higher shutter speeds, which is ok as the aperture is wide enough.

The 18-200 on the other hand is a DX lens and on a DX body has a range of 24-300mm, which makes it a good multipurpose travel lens and if you don't want to change lenses frequently, it makes good sense and it will meet 99% of your requirements. It also has VR, so will be useful for taking quick pics handheld.

If you are planning on going the FX way later, I would recommend building a collection of FX lenses, which will be compatible with your future FX, but if you intend to stay with DX, you can go with DX lenses, as these are less expensive. One of the benefits of DX is that you get 1.5x the range with the same lens as you would get on FX, which makes a difference when shooting wildlife/ birds.
Like they say in photography - bodies will come and go, but good lenses will stay and even appreciate in value!
(It is still a bottomless money pit - like my wife says!)

Congrats on the D600. On my wishlist too.

Regarding suggestions for wide angle, I assume you wish to go wider than 24mm (since your 24mm @ wide zoom is pretty good). One of the well trusted and solidly built VFM option would be the Tokina 12-24/f4. A lot of owners swear by it. If budget no consideration, then you could consider the Nikon counterpart. Going lower than 12 mm at the wide does not make sense on FF body as per me.

Possible issues are locating one.

Edit: Am not sure if the Tokina is Dx or Fx. Oops, just checked, both of the above are Dx format. There is a Tokina 16-28/2.8 Fx zooms, seems quite exotic. Else, you could consider the Nikon 20/2.8 AF prime (new or used). I use this on my D90 and am quite happy with it.

What I'm suggesting are awesome pieces of glass and quite expensive too. Landscape photographers swear by it.

In order of preference:

1. AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED

2. AF-S NIKKOR 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED

3. AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4D ED

Congratulations Behemoth, the D600 is making me wonder about going FX by selling my DX kit and I cannot make up my mind.

I currently have the D90, Nikkor 18-200 DX, Tokina 12-24/4 DX, Nikkor 24-85/3.5-4.5 (non-VR), Nikkor 80-200/2.8, Nikkor 45/2.8P and Nikkor 50/1.4G. My constant kit is the D90 with the 18-200 and I love that for its light weight and do-it-all capability. In fact I bought the 18-200 to replace the 80-200 in my travel kit after the weight killed me during a trip to Canada. My travel kit now is the 18-200, 12-24 and one of the primes.

Talking about glass I love, I used to love taking portraits with the 80-200/2.8 on an N90s. That lens just ain't the same on DX. F2.8 just isn't shallow enough on DX.

I could sell off the D90, the two DX lenses and the 45/2.8 and get the D600. I'd still be covered from 24mm to 200mm and I'd be using my FX glass, which is currently languishing. I lose light weight and some wide angle coverage but that can be fixed over time. I gain a better body, the FX perspective and low-light ability.

It's a tough decision. Opinions are solicited and will be much appreciated. Thanks

Though not relevant to Behemoth's query; I'd like to add that Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 is the best wide-angle for DX format. It is better than even Nikon's offerings...

I agree that it is one of the best Wide Angle for DX.

Since, he has now got a FX, the good option would be Nikon's 12-24 which may be expensive. The cheaper option is Sigma's 12-24. This is not great but not bad at all.
