OK. The basic question here is about the lens cleaning. From that, matters arising re using a legacy manual lens on a modern camera. All comments received gratefully!
Depends on the fungus state now. Minor fungus on the surface is easy to clean but if its got inside of the elements its not worth investing time on repairing this kit for use. But as a memory of the time it has gone through, you can do it.

The lens is pretty much available in ebay for 30-50 dollars if i am right. Cleaning the lens would cost say 1000-2000 INR if possible.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Thank you VW2010.

I just watched a video on taking the lens apart and re-assembling it. Unless one disassembles the aperture section, it can be done without fear of spending forever searching the house for small components. Seeing the inside of the glass would tell me if this is surface stuff or worse.

And yes, this was the kit lens on my OM2, just as it )or very similar) was on many, many Olympus OM cameras, so there are a lot of them about. It was a very popular camera in its day.

It's a question related to a "vintage" Olympus lens from an OM2 which has been sadly neglected in the back of a cupboard for over a decade. Interestingly, the camera seems to be in working order (and it has a film in it, though I guess that's just throw-away by now) but, much as I loved it way back then, it is the lens that interests me now.

It is just the standard lens of the day, 50mm f/1.8, but I'd love to give it a try on my Sony a6000. Cheap adapters are... cheap. And the setup would be full manual anyway.
.......
What should I do first: get the adapter and see if U can make the lens work for me, or try to get the lens cleaned/serviced?

........
I doubt that you can get rid of fungus that easily. Worth a try if it was an expensive lens, but 50mm F1.8 is one of the cheapest lenses. Further pre digital lenses may not be sharp enough for today's high MP cameras.

On the whole it may be cheaper to buy a new 50mm f1.8 lens as compared to its cleaning costs + adapter.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Fungus is well nigh impossible to remove. What it does is to attack the anti-reflection coating and damage it permanently. So it can be reduced but not removed. If you try and polish it off, then you will lose the Multicoating for sure.

Re: The DSLR Thread

Which lens should be used in place like Leh/Ladakh?

18-55mm kit lens?

55-200 mm zoom lens?

50mm prime lens?

Or all three of them depending on what is being clicked?

Just check with docanurag. He has just returned from the Mahindra raid to Ladakh. What I can say is that he preferred to take 18-140 optic with him. When on such a trip you do not want to change optics, as far as possible.

If one is driving, better to take as much gear as one can afford (re space, that is), even if some things are not used. But anyway, 18-140 is a great all-rounder

Space is not an issue for me. Only concern is that I currently have 18-55mm and 55-200mm with me. Will it be worth buying a 50mm or 18-140 for ladakh trip

Re: The DSLR Thread

@bluevolt; I do not think you need to bother. The combo will do. Since we had the option we swapped the kits around. On point I was making was that you are better off not swapping optics unless you have to. In driving on rough tracts the risk of marking a lens when swapping is always there.

Re: The DSLR Thread

I have a Nikon D200, bought in 2007. Recently, the mirror started locking up, with 'Err' on the top LCD. I found a video in Youtube, where somebody had the same issue and has described the solution also. It seems like the vertical grip is the culprit (the original Nikon accessory). I removed the battery grip did some experiment yesterday and it seems to have rectified the problem. No more locked up mirror. Has anybody come across this kind of issue in any other Nikon models, when used with the vertical grip?
I really didn't want to change the camera now, as the D200 is still doing a good job of fulfilling my needs. It creates usable images up to ISO800 and as I shoot RAW, I can get most of the details with small adjustments in Lightroom/Camera RAW.

Re: The DSLR Thread

I am planning to get my first DSLR. Which would be a good beginner model? I hope to learn and then get more lenses as I progress. I found a few models like Canon 1200D, 1300D, Nikon D3300, D3400, D5300. Their prices vary between 21k-35k. While I want to keep my investment low, I don't want to change the body in near future if it becomes obsolete. Which one would be a good model?

Thanks in advance,
Ashis

D5xxx have
. Swivel screen
. 14 bit RAW vs 12 bit RAW
. Connectivity, now in D3400

Rest is same.

In short if you do not want gizmos and better build D3xxx is as good as the D5xxx and D7xxx as they all have same or similar sensor. For a beginner a D3xxx makes sense as it is has a low investment and if you want to get out of DSLR the loss is minimal.
