Yes, went there.
Their prices are high in comparison to recent buyers here.
DV220 was quoted at 4K, whereas DV420(stock will come after 15 days) is estimated at 6-6.5K.

It definitely does play all regions.
Its simply amazing and super fast compared to the sony i have. The sony i have is also a hd dvd player. but i siply cannot compare it to the pionner. Pioneer is truly amazing.

My friend, Blu-Ray has already taken off. Almost all titles are avaiable on Blu-Ray abroad. If you go to any Crossword or Landmark, you will find many Hindi movies on Blu-Ray too.

Hey guys,

I wish to buy a Sony blu-ray player BDP-S370 from either USA or Dubai.

The pros and cons I found out were:

Buying in USA

Dirt cheap.

Worried about region codes and voltage issues and if it attracts duty when bought in USA.

Buying from Dubai

No voltage issues.

Fall in the same region as India

Price difference of only Rs 800 compared to around Rs 3k wrt USA.

Please give me suggestions guys. Plan to get it by Xmas/New Year.

Have you heard of the LaserDisc format? Once upon a time most Hollywood titles were also released on LD Format. Just because titles are available doesn't mean a format has taken off or that it won't become obsolete soon.
If you pick up any US magazine in the 80's, you would see advertisements for LD players & LD content.

In the US, just 8% of the households have a non-PS3 BluRay Player. If you include PS3, it comes to 17%. As compared to that, DVD penetration is close to 95%. For that matter even Netflix adoption comes close to that of BluRay at 15%.

All BluRay has done till now us that it has killed HDTV. It's the only HD format for now. But that doesn't mean it has taken off.

If I happen to buy the player from USA (due to cheap prices), do I need to go in for a step down transformer (220V to 110V) or a simple voltage convertor will do.

According to the owner's manual the indicated power is 22W, so is it necessary to buy a big transformer for a small size equipment.

I also need to know some places in Bangalore where I can buy them.

US version of such player would most probably be running on 110v
there are converters available in market which will give you option to plug the device into it and plug the converter to your 220v socket.

However it may be possible to find a version which runs on both 110/220volts A.C. many such devices have a switch to select the input voltage. try finding one which has this option so there are least chances of wasting money on converter.
they are available on ebay already, its like paying 10USD extra already by selecting a dvd player which runs on 110 volts.

Having had DVD players since they were around, I would stick to Pioneer or Panasonic, but could consider a Samsung for a 2nd TV, and stay away from Sony and LG. Sony rarely last for more than 1 year, and a June 2010 LG purchase lasted for 3 mths before giving errors. Pioneer 410 lasted for 2 years, and bought a Pioneer 420. Pioneer 410/420 are more expensive than 210, etc (price diff of 1.8-2K perhaps with 420 going for 5.3-6K depending on region). Hard to get though on ordinary retail shops. Need to locate a Pioneer service centre/dealer, but they are worth it. Bought that LG because 410 was not in stock and a LG purchased for 4K gave only 3 mths of service. See a lot of movies (3-4/week) and this usage has remained on all the above players.

Might be difficult to service a player bought outside, in India
you would get players for indian/european voltage and frequency in NY, if i am not mistaken, on Canal Street.

Pioneer & Philips - the only 2 brands of DVD players I would recommend. These 2 brands play anything you throw at them. Out of the 2 Pioneer is more expensive than Philips. Philips is also very easy to region unlock.
