Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I have a Netconnect+ USB modem bought around 2.5 years back. The modem came with USB cable which I used regularly. Now the cable has gone bad. I bought a regular USB cable from an electronics shop (50-60 Rs). It works fine with my pen drive etc, but doesn't work with the Netconnect Modem - at connection, I get a modem error. I checked with the Reliance store but they no longer sell the cable separately. Nor do they have it included with any of the new modems. I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference between that & one of the regular USB cables?

There is no difference. Its just the quality of the local cable that is a problem, as it doesn't transmit enough power to run the modem. Just get a better quality cable and you'll be good for another 3 years (hopefully!!)

Where can I get one? All the local shops have the same identical one.

Try ebay.in, though I really can't guarantee that it will work for your modem, but worth a try

I bought the one sold by dvdstoredelhi - if you see the picture - you will see that one side of the connecter has a case. The actual female connector is inside the case - and is a 1/2 cm in. In case of my Reliance modem, the cheap 40 Rs cable connects it to the computer but gives an error. With the dvdstoredelhi one, it doesn't even light up. I think because of the case, my Reliance modem doesn't even go in completely. Even with my 4GB usb storage, I have to really push it hard in to make it work with this device - the 40 Rs. cable works file with it.

Since it cost me a total of Rs. 90, no point in returning it. I'll try cutting the case up & seeing. This is the first time I am using ebay - what should I do to indicate to the seller that it's not working as intended.

I used a knife and cut 1 mm off the end of the female's case. And now my USB modem goes in completely & seems to work fine.

Can you please post the pic of the cable showing how you shortened it ?

this will help future searchers and will provide them solution.

You can write to dvdstore guys in their ebay page or email them.
Last time i interacted with them, they were very helping types.

Since I have already cut it, I can't provide the before picture.

Let me describe it as best as I can.
This is the picture on the ebay site
http://www.ebay.in/itm/SONY-OEM-USB-...-/140857930610

But actual product was a little different - it was like this - http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA300_.jpg

The difference is so tiny that you won't notice it.

Check this picture - http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/attach...hmentid=997719

The 1mm I have marked in red is the extra thing - it's slightly longer than that shown in the picture. This prevented my USB from going in completely.

I cut of the red part with a knife & it's all fine now.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

Guys, please do not take the free "Tata Docomo " free modem offer when purchasing "Micromax Funbook". You will be charged for it,from the third month, even if you do not use it ! I had bought a Funbook, and only for one day,i tried using their modem and that was on the first week, and since their speed was not satisfactory, i did not use it at all. now after 4th month, they are calling and telling me that i should pay from the third month. I told them,i did not use it,nor did i purchase it(it was given free). Now they have send me a lawyer notice. Shall i go to consumer court?what else should i do? whom should i complain to?

Did you give photo/address proof before getting the modem? Did you ask them to activate it? Did you sign anything? Did you check if it's prepaid or postpaid?

Do you have a copy of what you signed - you need to check what terms are there in that.
