Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

micro/USB ports on a cellphone are not meant to interface with data cards. On the N8 it will recognize only a storage device, on the other cellphones not even that.

Cellphone USB ports are meant to make the cellphone appear as a slave device to a PCs USB port, i.e. appear as a storage device to the PC.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

Hi!

I have recently bought a Huawei E5 Wifi device through which 5 wifi enabled machines/phones can be connected to the device at any given point of time and browse.

I travel a lot in U.P. belt and need a good 3G connection for this device. I was inclined towards MTNL as when i am out of town then i can roam easily on BSNL. Anybody has any experience of using MTNL 3G data services.

Cheers....

Stay away from Airtel, their USB broadband datacard totally sucks !!!!!

If anyone else using airtel has a different opinion, please do update here. I'd be interested in knowing what your logical settings are for the datacard.

I have been using Airtel for over 45 days now, it works well at my office and at my home. I used it in roaming while travel to Delhi last month and it worked fine there. I did not face any issues and speeds were good. The speed you get i dependent on the tower in your area. If there is no 3G tower or 3G signal is low it will connect to 2G and speeds will be low.

I have not faced any issues till now and i am happy with my airtel 3G.

If you plan to visit U.P.(east) be prepared for lot of BSNL 3G outages, by the time you would struggle with customer care for resolution I am sure your trip would be over.
So better come to U.P.(east) with a alternate arrangement for 3G.

U.P. Also has Idea, Airtel, Aircel, vodafone as 3G providers

Thank you, but most of travelling involves UP West as of now. If BSNL faces 3G outages, how is the performance of Reliance?

Cheers...

I am mostly using Reliance net connect BB+ and its mostly above 2mbps and my connectivity sessions are not less than 12 hours a day without a single outage.

However My USB modem is connected to TP-Link 3G Router so I am able to use multiple laptops and phone on WIFI at home.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I have been using a Reliance BB+ prepaid connection for about 2 years now.
I use it extensively while travelling across the country.
The speed in Metros is good. The speed in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities is pathetic.
On the road(highways) its just as pathetic as any other.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I have recently started using Tata Docomo 3G with a micromax 353 data card and the speed is above 4 Mbps last time I tested it. Coverage is better than it was earlier.

I have also used BSNL earlier and the speed was good. However, I had some issues with continuous connectivity, hope that helps.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I have been using a Tata Photon (now Docomo) for over two years and am quite happy with them. Only it is not that effective on large downloads (say >50MB per file), and does crash occasionally. Tata and my Reliance phone on EVDO are far more stable and better than BSNL since the latter even even displaying H (for HSPDA) takes far longer to download from the Android market.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

My BSNL EVDO bought in 2006 still works brilliantly. I pay 650 per month for unlimited usage, and since the exchange having the evdo tower is barely half a kilometer from my house i get peak 3 mbps during days. Torrents, rapidshare etc everything works perfectly just like a landline broadband connection. But this is only possible because the tower is in line with my house.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

I am getting a bsnl 3g sim for data usage. would like to know which unlocked usb stick to buy?
a quick search showed Huawei UMG 1831,K4505 and E353 as the models available. e353 has only 3G mode while other modems works on 2G and 3G. prefer a modem where firmware can be updated(managed) and I've heard about some overheating and disconnection issues with these data cards. any truth. suggest any other option(unlocked).

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

BSNL has got great prepaid data plans (Using on the 4S). Staying on topic, Airtel hasnt let me down in Bangalore and the Huawei E1731 modem they give is easily unlockable
