Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

Nonsense! That is not how it is supposed to work. Don't go by what Airtel support says - johnnies don't even know their own shoe size, let alone anything else. They give very imaginative answers to problems they have no clue about. Have a heart, they are just trying to do their job without any organizational support!!!

Quite likely their market research would have told them that since there are not many users in that area, they need not waste bandwidth!!! Ergo, no 3G. In their home circles, there is no question of not supporting Airtel 3G roaming subscribers from anywhere in India (I have checked that in Pune with a Bangalore SIM on 2 devices).

Agree that the Airtel datacard support team is pathetic, however this seems to be true that 3G roaming has been discontinued.

Agreed there was a ruling to 3G roaming but in order to correct that, they have screwed up their 3G network in Karnataka too, their 3G bandwidth has become pathetic since the last week of Dec after they starting changing their exchange configuration, infact their EDGE speeds are better than 3G at this point of time and they are still claiming to be rectifying this as the backend and will "soon" be normal.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

What ever the data card the best way to get speed would be to go in for a antenna: effectively making it wired from wireless. I think most of these cards are made by Qualcomm and give or take are equally slow in the wireless mode, unless there aren't many people sharing the waves with you. I have a Photon Plus with an antenna now it delivers decent download speeds of 1Mbps and above, prior to that it was in the region of 10-20 Kbps. After a lot of hollering I got them to give me an antenna free of cost or I threatened with consumer court action after promising upto 3.1 Mbps, in their ad's.

I too just logged a ticket with them, Hope they cleanup the mess soon. Right now I am back in Blr and the 3g connection is giving pathetic speeds.

Luckily the 3G connection was just a backup to be used while on the move and I have my regular landline broadband. Lets hope for the best .
However on a parallel note there seems to be an ocean of difference in the quality of their regular landline support staff vs the 3g staff.

No, those links describe something else. If you are an Airtel KK subscriber in roaming in Airtel TN, you are not 'roaming' as is the context of those links. If you were to go to a circle where there is no Airtel XX 3G, earlier you would have been transparently switched by Airtel to Voda or Idea or whoever has 3G b/w license in that circle. TRAI is trying to prevent *that* kind of roaming, i.e. each operator has to pay in that circle, and not 1 operator as earlier. If you are an Airtel KK subscriber AND Airtel TN has 3G license in TN, you are not 'roaming' in TRAI context.

Not sure, but maybe Airtel TN really does not have a 3G license contrary to what is expected. Maybe some manager in Airtel was trying to save investment by not implementing it (and earning a bonus). Who knows!

As DerAlte mentioned above, TRAI is trying to curb 'bandwidth-sharing' roaming facilities, where a service provider (say, A) uses another service provider's (say, B) 3G b/w in a particular region, instead of buying b/w for himself.

A & B make some financial arrangement amongst themselves, and the govt gets nothing out of the deal. Hence all the hullabaloo. If your service provider has a 3G license in any part of India outside your home state, you're entitled to 3G services in that area.

Re: The DATA Card and USB Modem discussion thread (Reliance/Airtel/Tata)

Hi,
Do any of you know if we can transfer the number on the datacard to a mobile number (same operator or another?)?

I have a nice number sequence on my datacard & want to use it on a normal phone. I dont mind buying their mobile connection and swap the numbers between the data card & the new connection OR chuck the datacard and just have the number.

I understand that this is technically possible as we can send a sms / call using the data card number (when we are unlike/active connection) and should work through MNP as well in theory. I have tried inquiring at their shops & they have no clue. Instead of trying to check, they just say, no saar not possible. Hence thought of checking here on this forum.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

What is BSNL EVDO service like in Pune?
They have a very attractive package with unlimited data (no FUP) for only Rs.750/-
Do BSNL have agents who can come to your house to demonstrate the service and reception before you buy?

I don't know which is the best, but I'll say this.
Stay away from Airtel, their USB broadband datacard totally sucks !!!!!

If anyone else using airtel has a different opinion, please do update here. I'd be interested in knowing what your logical settings are for the datacard.

I have tried this (Photon+) on my Nokia N8 via the microUSB port but the card wasn't detected let alone browse.
