I once thought that my office genset is too loud that I can hear it 5 floors above, that too through all those glasses and cabins - but guess what, it a Dell Optiplex with a faulty fan, and - you guessed it - a prescott CPU!

On second thoughts, I guess the fan became faulty BECAUSE it is running on a prescott!

The cabinet was ultra slim, black finish. How reliable are these? Anyone has experience with slim line pcs(mini pc/ultra small factor?)
a year back when i went to ritchie street, where chennai s wholesale and retail elcetronic and computer stores are present,to buy a RAM for my friends laptop. one of the shop owner was using a pc with ultra slim cabinet. when i enquired about it he said the excess heat generated inside will damage motherboard and manufacturers wont replace the motherboard in case if any problem arises if the MB is fitted in these slim cabinets. i am not sure about this.

Its update time once again !

My puny 4 x 1GB 667 Mhz Corsair ValueRams were replaced by 2 x 1GB 1066 Mhz Team Extreem Dark rams. Also, on the gfx card front, 2 GeCube 4850s are coming my way by tomorrow.

It is evident that i need to change the PSU from CoolerMaster Extremepower 600W to something better. Which one to go for ??

Otherwise i Silverstone but that isnt available here.

So here you go,

Corsair TX750 = 7.5k

I have used both and both are just fine.

Ran into bad luck - My GeForce 7300GS that had served me good for a while decided to conk off - its fan stopped working, and made the card act up :(

So am now shopping for a 22" LCD and a ATI based GFX. Maybe an upgrade to my P4 630 workhorse that is way over due for an upgrade...!

Looks like one conked out GFX card is going to set me back by the cost of an entry level computer!

Cabinet was 8 years old, so it was replaced as well.

This is new config :

CPU: Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Motherboard: ASUS M2AVM-HDMI
RAM: Transcend DDR 2 800 MHz - 1 GB
Cabinet: Iball WorkHorse Black + 400 W SMPS
HDD: Seagate 500 GB

Thing to do for next few weeks:

Setup this PC as HTPC with Ubuntu. It has S-Video and composite TV OUT and SPDIF audio out. Need to connect it to TV and audio system and setup 5.1 output in Linux.
