I bought it with B&W immediately after launch about 2 years ago. And lets not forget the 12K odd (in addition to phone price) I've spent on add-on software...

Out of interest - I'd like to see how he composes an email and types in a URL without a keypad or a stylus. I'm really intrigued - is it voice recognition?

What about SMS? How does one type in contact information for a new contact - or do you have to do that through your PC? How do I edit a word doc or an excel file?

Questions Questions Questions - I want to see and touch this revolutionary screen that does everything that I have to use a stylus or keypad for. Seems impossible at the moment, but that may be the Killer App, just like the iPod's unique user interface.

Does it have a camera?

One site said it has a 2mega pixel camera but no other site mentions anything about a camera.

Thanks - checked out SMS and email. Nothing revolutionary - pops up an on-screen keyboard which is not a very bright idea without a stylus.

As for the Safari explorer, it looks like you'll have to save all your websites as bookmarks and then select from them.

Phone - again NOTHING impressive on the site. Ditto with all the others. The biggest letdown is that you'll have to use your thumb or finger for everything, which is not a bright idea unless you're very precise.

So far it looks like there's nothing new about it - nothing this phone can do that I cannot do better with my JasJar, for instance. Or, with the Eten M600i, JAM or K-JAM which would be more comparable.

Unlike other Apple products, this one seems like a step back in time. End of topic for me till I can get a touch and feel of it.

Yeah steeroid we have to wait and see how intelligent this touch screen really is.
If you do have to be very precise then it's a let down. the phones you mentioned have much better input methods.

Hey Guys,

I love apple to death but this is gonna be pretty pricey without a contract. I don't want to burst anyone's bubble but the 8GB model with a 2 year contract is $599. The average cingular bill with data and voice (450mins of talk time a month) would be about $60 a month plus itune downloads etc. So at the end of 2 years this whole deal is gonna work out to about $2000plus (Not factoring in itune downloads). At Rs.90,000 - thats a pretty expensive proposition no matter how revolutionary the product is. I figure that unlocked in the US this phone is going to run about a $1000 on ebay and the like. By the time it makes it to India - I would figure about Rs.40,000 in the gray market and about Rs.50,000 through apple stores in India. just my 2 cents.

I dont think you should be counting the amount you spend on the talktime in the cost of the phone. If you want compare the price of the phone to other Cingular 2 year contract phones

E62 - $199
Blackberry Pearl - $249
V3i - $250

The phone is set to launch in Asia only by 2008. Thats a long time in the world of cellphones. Apple should have launched this phone all over the world at the same time. Just hope the initial excitement doesnt die down by the time the phone comes over.

Ya, 2008 is a long time. I hope this doesn't go the SE P990i (Hermione) way, with the specs being out of the words at the time of announcement, and just run-of-the-mill at the time of actual availability.

I meant "out of the world". :-)

And a 2MP cam is just ok, at this time. At launch time, 2MP cams will be really so-so.

From the initial feature-list, this phone doesn't seem to be completely targeted at the Biz crowd, but more at the multimedia crowd and the young, non-biz messaging crowd. The Stocks widget actually seems out of place on this phone, as there are no other business apps mentioned. We can hope that it will fully support MS Office or an alternative. So I don't think there is any sense comparing it with a WiMo phone. At that, the phone is priced a bit higher than normal, considering the specs on paper.

Support for 3rd party apps (usually what can make or break a phone aimed at the more tech crowd) seems to be missing right now. Ok, it does support widgets, but to what extent will it support full blown apps that need full co-operation from the OS? We'll need to wait and see.

Apple will most likely need to give the device a major bump, features wise, if they want this phone to be competitive at the time of availability to public. Maybe the early launch was for collecting feedback. After all, it is a new kind of product for them too. And they haven't done a PDA since the Apple Newtons of yore. Wait-and-Watch is going to be the motto here.

No Numeric kaypad! That'll keep the 40+ crowd out.

Steeroid,

I switched from the O2 Atom to the Sony 990i becuase I needed a numeric keypad. Now O2 has the stealth. It is really an Atom with a keppad becuase funnily I think my O2 Atom was MORE stable than the 990i!
