Timely question.

I happened to download their plan details just this afternoon. No marks for guessing that the proposed plans are way too costly and the combinations useless as well as senseless. Yet to figure out the next course of action. Wife was talking about cutting the cord .

So where are the simplified and cheaper plans TRAI promised with this move?

I was planning on getting rid of my Tatasky connection when my subscription ends in March, I guess it will be sooner when they bump me to pro-rated channel-based pricing that'll eat up the remaining balance like a starving mongrel. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Wish I could use the same words in relation to the geniuses at work in TRAI!

Killing competition and paving way either for monopolies or at best oligarchies seems to be an act that TRAI has specialised in. And it is doing an excellent job towards fulfilling its agenda of robbing people to fill the coffers of Paul; just that the said Paul goes by and is known to us by some other name.

I happened to get the document where the channels by broadcasters with the price list based on which I had decided the bouquets as posted in my earlier post. To my surprise the prices mentioned on Tata Sky website are different from that offered by the broadcasters and even some of the bouquets are missing from Tata sky selection list. Infact tata Sky offers less for more price. This was expected from tata Sky

Attaching the original list for everybody's reference.

Found the below article, a bit old now, throwing some light on the industry.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com...w/65958279.cms

Quote:
“All of us decided not to offer our channels in the basic pack for two reasons,” an industry executive said. "First is that there will be a mad rush to be a part of these packages and distribution platforms (cable & DTH) will ask for astronomical carriage and placement fee, and secondly, viewers will not want to go for higher packs if they can get their dose of entertainment at a low price"

As per their RIO documents, ZEE, SPN, Viacom18 and TV18 have converted all their free-to-air channels into pay channels.

Are all the 25 DD FTA channels madatory. If so, there are eating up into the 100 channel count for calculation of network fee.

Once we submit the selected channels/packs, will these get enforced from 1st Feb only. If so, can we watch as per the current plan?

Also, can we change the channel packs once we submit them.

A few more relevant lines from the article:
Quote:
the idea was to make the basic pack “unattractive” for subscribers. “For long the pay TV industry has suffered low ARPU (average revenue per user) and we decided not to continue with the same mistake we committed with FreeDish,” the person told ET. “With none of the channels of the top broadcasters available, they (subscribers) will be forced to opt for pay channels at higher price.” At given RIOs, a subscriber will have to shell out Rs 400-450 per month for all the standard definition (SD) channels of top broadcasters

Again from the same article:
Quote:
Out of these 100 channels, 26 are mandatory Prasar Bharati channels and we expect a rush among broadcasters to pay to get in the remaining 74 channel slots,” said a senior executive at a national cable company

Thanks!

That's ridiculous to say the least. I had got 50% off on the annual package of all channels - now that same stuff costs more than 1000 bucks per month

Exactly. Have 3 Den set top boxes in my house including an HD one. Was paying Rs.810 per month for all 3 of them.
Now its costing around Rs.500 for a single SD connection. So much for cheaper TV viewing. And not to mention the useless 25 DD channels eating up from the quota of 100 channels.

BTW any idea about how often we can change the packages or channels? Once every month or something else?

Bye bye DTH!
I have already done that 6 months back. Got the Firestick. Use it for Amazon Prime, Netflix and Hotstar. Totally worth it. You get all the movies and TV series on it, without ads and at your convenience.

Where did you get this info from? Atleast the notification which i read did not specifically state this! I thought the choice rests with the consumer. My cable operator is absolutely clueless.

Those 25 channels are mandatory, so i guess we only have a choice of 75 channels. I'm struggling to total even 50 channels right now. My cable operator has no idea how to go about things, so i'm physically submitting my list of channels tomorrow. I'm given to understand Rs 153 for 100 channel scheme is to be submitted before 31st January. After that i do not know if its applicable.

I'm attaching the picture from Airtel website which I took.
It details the NCF - Network a connection Fee.

Upto 100 channels it's 130 + tax=153.

The 100 channels may include free channels, paid or HD. If HD channels are there, 1 HD =2 SD channels is the ratio for NCF.

If there are no paid channels in the 100 selected, it will be just 153. If paid are there, the paid channel cost +Rs 153.

This is my understanding. Hope I'm clear.

I'm still sort of confused now. As i couldn't spot the said circular. But what you stated is what the below report says.

https://www.financialexpress.com/ind...-this/1445397/

But the prior circular says something else!
https://main.trai.gov.in/sites/defau...0410012019.pdf

Quote:
Consumers have complete freedom to choose their desired 100 Standard Definition (SD) channels within the network capacity fee of maximum Rs 130. The desired channels could be in a-Ia-carte Free to Air channels or Pay channels or bouquet of pay channels or any combination thereof.

There is another sting in the tail. If you have multiple tv's you could get the multi TV pack for a reasonable price. I used to pay 400 PM in all for the 2 TV using this option. Now the second TV is being charged at just 50 rupees less than the price of the first TV. So now I pay almost double. This is for Tata Sky though. I think its time to bid goodbye and move to streaming.
