I have travelled with drone in check-in baggage before. However this time, I have not opted for check-in baggage. I will have only a cabin baggage. Is it possible to carry DJI mini-2 in cabin baggage. I know domestic flights allow drones in cabin baggage.

Not in my experience, usually even with just the conteoller you get a million questions during the security check. Also having it in cabin bag increases the chance of confiscation or just random questions and delays

But you cant (ie, shouldn't) put your controller in check-in luggage because it has a Li-Ion battery thats a fire hazrad.

I checked with the airline (Batik), they responded that nano drones are allowed as cabin baggage. Same is mentioned on Malaysia airline website. Even it is allowed to carry nano drones as cabin baggage on domestic Indian flights.

Yes, thats correct...

I wasn't talking about drones - I was referring to drone-controllers that have non-removable Li-Ion batteries (and yes, they must also be carried in cabin baggage since Li-Ion batteries are classified as fire hazard and so must be carried in as cabin baggage not be present in the checked-in luggage.)

What if something breaks? One of my neighbors bought a INR 30k nano drone from such a manufacturer. He was lucky enough to fly that a few times and after that, it started showing issues with self-levelling. Later, its batteries too gave up. The batteries were proprietary sizes and he couldn't even get a replacement battery. Since he knew that I built a couple of drones, he gave it to me for repair, and I tried to fit 2x 18650 Li-Ion batteries onto the frame but it couldn't fly well with that added weight.

Some more freestyle flying training with my 5-inch quad:

A picture of my 5-inch and and the pilot's equipment:

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

Freestyle training continues... in this video you can see:

1) Power loops
2) Power Roll - 180 roll midway through a power loop
3) Split-s (half baked )
4) Front flip
5) Left and right rolls and
6) Some quick turns

I am slowly tightening up the tune on this quad to perform these maneuvers more aggressively.

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

Any suggestions for an absolute beginner drone? Am interested in learning how to fly one, very basic. Not looking for anything fancy or for high image/video quality, or degrees of control or anything like that. Just something basic, to get started and learn how to use one. At a price that won't hurt even if I lose it or it crashes. I see a couple of models for under 2k on Amazon, how are they for starter models? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Also, what's the legality on using these drones in public spaces? Can we legally fly one for personal use, even in a public space?

You can buy toy drones for prices in the range of 2000. Heck, you can also get a drone for Rs 1500, it is just a circuit board with micro controller, accelerometer, gyro, and 4 motors. You control it using an app in your Smartphone.

If you are looking for the real experience flying a drone, I wouldn't recommend these toy drones. You should either get an entry level drone meant for photo/videography use or build a freestyle/cinewhoop kind of drone yourself. Hobby drone parts are easily available in India these days.

As far as flying experience is concerned, there are mainly two types:

1) Line of Sight flying - for e.g., most DJI drones used for videography. They basically self-level all the time, and as a pilot, you just need to look at the drone and focus on up-down-left-right-near-far controls. Its quite easy to master this.

2) FPV (First Person View) flying - this is the most interesting, and immersive flying experience you can get from a drone. In FPV flying, the pilot controls the drone 100%. There is no self-levelling. Pilots get to see a 'cockpit view' of the drone through the goggles they wear, and they can fly the drone as if they are sitting on it. FPV flying is a popular hobby, FPV drones are able to capture the most breath-taking actions scenes that line-of-sight flying can't, they can capture landscapes and mountain ranges beautifully, and learning FPV flying has a steep learning curve. Usually, you need to spend several hours in a simulator to master it before you can fly a real FPV drone without crashing it.

I'm onto my next FPV build - a more powerful 5-inch quad this time around. My earlier one was a 4S build, this is going to be a 6S. (4S/6S are Li-Po battery specifications. 6S has 6 cells in series, 4S has only 4)

Each of these motors can produce around 600 Watts of power at max throttle, can you believe it!

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

I was recently at Udaipur, decided to take up the Mini 2 to perform footage duties once again, also it was time to try out the new battery I recently purchased before my Europe trip. Unfortunately the Europe trip this time was very compact and I did not get time to take the drone out, although I made a beautiful but boring video of UNESCO world heritage site Kinderdijk, set in the old village by the same name where it houses natural wind turbines dating back to 3 centuries. The video can be found on my youtube page, I may put up here a link.

For now, a serene video of the Lake Pichola from Udaipur.

And the build is complete! Bhpian PatchyBoy suggested the name "AngryHornet" for this build and I think it is very apt. This will be able to fly around like one and it sounds like one

Re: The Drones Thread - Reviews, Tips, Advice

I was looking to get my first drone. Is there anything better than the DJI Mini 2 SE ? Also where does one buy it at a good price as there are huge fluctuations in online prices in different websites.

Looking for reliability, easy spare and good image quality. Sort of like a Hyundai of the drone world rather than a Skoda.
