Before you do that you need to understand if you want a 16GB player or a 160GB player. This will depend on how much music you like to carry close to your heart.

Let me ask you this. Do you want to see and play with your MP3 player or do you just want to put it in your pocket and listen to the music?

Go for the 160gig. The interface of the touch will be a novelty only for some time. The music on the 160gig will last forever

160GB will hold about 20,000 songs is a fairly good quality MP3 format.

The Apple Store (India) - iPod touch says 29,300/- but resellers like indiaplaza.in would offer some discounts.

To make matters simpler, apple guys will never ask you for a bill when you bring it in for repair in less than a year.
How come then, for the iPhone it is a totally different story?

Is it just because it is locked? If it is available in an unlocked version in the future, will the same logic apply?

Spot on. When you have an official iPhone for India, it will be a different story. And don't forget Apple has chosen to offer iPhone with a telephone contract. When they sell iPhones from stores, the same condition will apply.

i think you can get a better price. And dont worry about it getting obsolete. This is the main weapon for companies to lure the customer into buying more expensive stuff that is "NEW". As long as your happy with the primary function it performs, no need to care about obsolete.

Also, in any case, with Apple, you cant have anything new for more than 6-8 mnths. Steve Jobs himself said "If anyone's going to outdate our products, it will be us."
So rest assured, any Apple product you buy, will have a minor update very soon. No need to fret for that. My 30 GB 5th Gen Video is a year old and became "obsolete" within 8 mnths of buying it. But it still looks/works like new.

Another thing is that iPods have great resale value. So even if you wanna buy something else later, you can recover UPTO 80% or more of the cost depending on the condition of the pod at that time.

Absolutely agreed! It is the music (neatly arranged too) that makes a good iPod, not new features and all that jazz.
