I knew that question was coming...:) Sure P&S cameras are giving SLR like features, but not quite.

SLR gives the following features that P&S can't
---------------------------------------------------
1) Optical viewfinder which sees through the same lens as the sensor. No electronic viewfinder can beat that. (this is why it is called a SLR, single lens reflex)
2) Option to switch between various dedicated lenses unlike all-in-one single lens on P&S. An average SLR buyer spends 30% on body and 70% on lenses. Has the option to rent or borrow super expensive lenses for special occasions.
3) Besides, these SLRs contain very high degree of control for various functions like bracketing, color control, light metering, flash metering, etc. But that's not unique to SLRs, but usually available only in high priced cameras.

SLR's have a bigger sensor size than P&S.most of the P&S have sensor of 1/1.6" or 1/1.7" or even 1/2.5" ( 1/1.6" is around 5 by 6 mm) whereas SLR ( entry level ones like canon 350D has 22 X24mm ( approximate) where as high end canon has got 35mm sensor. same number of pixels on bigger sensor will give better performance.
compared to canon S3 i feel fuji 6500 fd is better bargain. it has picture stabilization but not IS. but it is OK. it has wide angle zoom ,ISO performance is unparalleled to S3 and better aperture range. i have personally tested it in show room. it has got a bigger sensor than canon. check the web for photos with it.i have seen a photo taken a pitch darkness with fuji. S3 above 200 is not good. 6500 is good 5 K less than S3 at MRP
check this link
Rødtinden

here is the link where one can see the performance of 6500 fd at lowlight and day light conditions

I need a large screen, if I am to buy one of these SLR-like things. The S3 only does, what 2"? The Sonys are the only ones with 3" displays, the H5 and H9. How are these?

Also, does Sony offer a world-wide warranty? Does anyone?

If anybody looking for a good compact camera, check out this one.

I've seen the result on my comp and going to buy for sure.

Sadly the G7 could never be what G6 was.
Its a backward evolution. Many features of G6 are gone
Fast Lens, RAW mode, IR remote, movable screen, LCD status panel.
The batteries been degraded too.

rkg, Fuji indeed has great sensors, the best sensors in P&S, nobody else comes close.

v1p3r, I would not make the LCD screen a deciding factor. Once you go to DSLR, or want to go to DSLR the only thing you look at is the histogram

another review of the G7:

DCRP Review: Canon PowerShot G7

It's a good camera but really expensive. I guess if you cant afford a DSLR this is the best alternative.

I was seeing the A710IS as well which seems good but i guess fewer manual controls.

My Sony DSC F-717 which was released in 2002 has histogram. In fact it is one of the finest camera to learn photography, I still it use for casual photographs.

I wish sony made cams like F717 and F828.
How come I do not see an IR from you Samu, you got such a wonderful cam!
(hint, shift to night mode in day)

They did, you mean not any more?
Ah! I know about the IR ability, but that is something I never explored, may be I should some day.

The current crop of sony's do not have the same Karma that the F707, F717 F828 had.
F828 was the last of the greats, and was replaced by a contraption named the R1. If only they would have retained all F828 features, and then made the R1 with the same lens it has now and the APS-C sensor.
Unfortunately, people who decide the specs don't know anything about photography. Its mine is bigger than yours megapixel war.

Hi TSK
as you suggested i searched for olympus 8080 and sony F 828 in bangalore. not available in seconds market also. olympus distributor said he will enquire and let me know. when i read the review of 8080 i was surprised that olympus/sony discontinued such models. bith had the same sensor 2/3. only Welcome to JK Camerazone is having it but the price is 35 K. one is better off with SLR than 8080 at that price.

Well, I am just trying to get the hint right, you mean the F717 has the night vision mode which could take pics rather the X-ray stuff where you could see through people's clothing partially? Sony had this thing on their handycams, didn't know if it came out in digi cams too. The link which discusses this is here, but is it true?X-Ray Vision - Topic Powered by eve community

I had actually put my F-717 on sale for a while when my wife insisted I sell it before buying dSLR. Due to lack of interest I took it off the market. Of course, I ain't selling it anymore.:)

Sensor size is quite a controversial topic, for example 4/3 system adopted a much smaller sensor. BTW, you got the 350D sensor (APS-C) size wrong, 22x24mm would make a squarish sensor. The correct value is 22.2 x 14.8 mm.

 Almost decided to take risk with Fuji A 700 .

PS: Is dc's cheaper in US?

I ended up purchasing Nikon L-11. Iam unhappy with the outcome. I target one position and press the button to click, but it seems there is a delay time (for example. I click the button when I see a vehicle in the picture, but the output was an empty road :Shockked: )
