I think its a great camera for the price. It has lot of settings to keep you busy..most of which i am still trying to figure out. It has a face detection feature, which when turned on the camera contineously auto focuses if it detects a face or more faces in the viewfinder frame. The super macro mode is awesome. If you use the cam in the auto mode it locks most of the manual settings. The cam also take real good videos.. 640x480 at 30fps and 320x240 at 60 fps. I am really happy with the buy..worth every penny. you can see a good review on this cam on youtube. YouTube - Canon Powershot S5 IS Digital Camera

Let me know if you want to know something specific.

Guys, anybody knows what's the best price after the tax drop that happened recently for Nikon 40Dx and Canon 400D? Before the tax drop the price for both was around 29K.

On ebay india, Nikon D40x is for about 28K? Is it safe to buy a DSLR from ebay?

It is better not to buy from eBay. as most of the sellers at ebay will not give you the manufacturers warranty. that means it is either a smuggled piece or refurbished piece. i think it is mostly the second one the prices are much less than what it is in USA. it is always better to insist on manufacturers warranty especially if one is spending 10K and more. we got one canon handy cam from USA. it developed a problem and canon authorized service center quoted 10.5K for repair, that is when you get a new one at 15K. check at jjmehta.com

FYI, JJ Mehta sells grey market stuff with only a dealer warranty.

However, sometimes this dealer warranty is far better than the manufacturer one! Atleast the dealer gives you prompt attention! If its a good dealer. And the difference in cost E.g. D40 grey/official: 21k/30+K means that the 10,000 you save can always be used in case of emergency repairs. Plus, most warranties are only for 1 year, after that, you are stuck with the bills yourself.

JJmehta do sell with B&W and manufacturers warranty.

Canon, Fuji offer two years, sony, panasonic offer three years warranty.

the only reason i said it is better to buy with manufacturer warranty is to avoid refurbished pieces being sold. if is original and unused it can not be sold less than what is the price in say USA or other countries because the seller has to get it from some where ( mostly smuggled )

one more thing is some of the sellers in ebay and other places do quote much higher than MRP in india. this i have experienced in Bangalore grey market.
especially the quote very high MRP which is not correct. for ex canon gives MRP for all its cameras in canon india web site. check this with ebay rates and grey market for different models

The prices about two weeks back was about 26K for D40X and 27K for 400D.
400D with B&W will cost 40K+.

A member here had an interesting experience with them recently. He went in to buy a lens. they take out a lens from the box and show it to him. They asked him if he wants official or unofficial. Price difference was a few thousand. He said he'd rather buy official as the difference was not too much. They proceed to pack up the same lens they had showed him, which was wrapped in a newspaper apparently!

So he wonders how they can give him an official lens like that!

Thanks, any idea where i can buy the camera at those prices? Any place in Hyderabad, if you know would be great.

Also, i checked JJMehta and i find them quite expensive. And, now i am a bit scared to buy from ebay as the thought of refurbished didnt come across my mind.

Just in case, if i get it from US, will it ensue any customs problems?

Whoa, B&W lens in a newpaper wrap. That sounds very very fishy.

These are Bangalore prices my friend, I have no idea about prices or any dealers in Hyderabad. If you want to buy the camera from Bangalore, I can sure help you with that.

S3 IS is 13,300 in the grey in Bangalore..this price was quoted last week. If you buying from the grey i guess S5 IS makes more sense at 16,600.

official MRP of S3IS is 20995 asper canon india website. S5IS is 24995
here is the link

the quote of 20.5k is grey or white?

Folks,
I have Sony DCR TRV 33 (minDV camcorder). I am using it as digital camera as well. Picture quality is not very bad (1M pixel). But lighting is not sufficient even while taking snaps in tubelight.

I am thinking if I need to go for a flash (how much it costs?) or buy altogether new digital camera and use camcorder only for video.

Please help me.

Sathya I recommend you buy a new digital camera, as investing on a flash will not solve the problem.

Cheers
Hellcat
