the best i have is a 70-300. I thought it will help on wildlife trips. But then reviews across the site, esp on one of the Canon Forum is not too encouraging.

Thank you so much for the feedback..moreover I think Rs.6000/- is a pretty competitive price.

Have you tried using a TC with your current lens ? You would spend less, yet get similar functions.

See if you can get this from US. Better spec cameras in US are available at less than 100$. Try Canon A570 IS if possible.

Guys: Please help:

A friend of mine is looking to buy a new digital camera. Budget can go upto around 25k.

I suggested him to buy an entry level DSLR. Although he liked the idea of having a professional, he is not too interested in photography, and says he'd be happier if there is a handy P&S that canfit in his pocket and takes excellent pics too.

Which P&S do you suggest for 25k?

Also, for a guy not too interested in photography, does a DSLR do any good?

A Canon Powershot S3 IS or Powershot S5 IS is a good bet. Check exact prices.

Don't push him for DSLR. A DSLR can be annoying for a person who is not that intrested in Photography.

I would suggest the same camera as Codor has Canon S5IS Its next best to a DSLR with 12x zoom and loads of options to play around.

Any idea about price on 300mm+ lenses for a day?

Like @condor suggested, you cannot go wrong with S3 or S5. There is one relatively unkown camera called sx100 IS from canon. Exactly similar to S5 but without hot shoe and some low end video recording (in comparison). If video is not a priority this can be added to the short list.
If size is a priority, I am not sure if these would appeal though.

Options for fit-into-pocket models: the Canon IX US series.

options I'd consdier:

Panasonic TZ3 - 10x lens, very compact but low light photography is iffy.
Canon IXUS 860/870 - 3x lens with 28mm wide and uber compact (panny has a competitor in teh FX55 but I dont find it as available in India).

since the camera has to be pocketable I would stick to camera that are under 12oz (a can of coke).

I have the S5IS. That is the reason he wants a camera now . However, he prefers smaller handy ones.

Another friend of mine, tried to buy this one from dubai. However, seems it new in the market, they couldn't get it. Finally he settled for a Lumix FZ8.

@CrAzY dRiVeR , Since he has a sufficient budget, make sure the cam is stacked with useful features like Image Stabilization etc. Stereo audio, if possible. Best Shot selection. Some manual controls

@CrAzY dRiVeR

I am not sure about the category the camera is in but it is under budget and should last him a really long time. Canon G9 . I may be wrong about it fitting in a pocket but it is very highly rated and is much smaller than S5 and H9 but still has nearly all their features.

Also look at SD1000 though its way under budget. Amazing camera and excellent P&S and it will definitely fit into a jeans pocket. Suggested these two cameras cause know people who own these and they are very very satisfied.
