Quite unlikely to be a hardware issue. As tbppjpr posted, try and troubleshoot the reason for the crash. My guess is it is likely to be a driver issue, something to do with a windows update or a rogue application. If you have system restore set up, you could revert to an earlier restore point as an alternative.

Most of crashes happen due to corruption of code. That can be memory or disk related. The event log can help, but at times it is not omnipotent.

Am loving SSD prices right now! They just keep dropping by the day.

Without specifics, LPDDR RAM is usually soldered, which is not a good thing.
Unfortunately, not many options in this price range, but just FYI.

Neither, if you do a little bit more research, you could find Ryzen 5 5th gens and Ryzen 5 7th gens with DDR4 and LPDDR5 respectively under this budget. You could also find a couple of i5 11th gen with DDR4 RAM as well.

Regardless of these, your requirements are not clear, the processor, generation and RAM aren't the only things to be considered while making a purchase.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Bought this Dell battery in recent sale. Was apprehensive if it will be a genuine product. Please to report it came from Dell and after installing the battery it's showing 5 hours of backup which is exactly what original battery used to show.

Yes, I have, it comes directly from the nearest Reliance digital store, so no need to be worried. If you go to https://www.reliancedigital.in/ and check for the same laptop, you will find it there as well. I feel the discounts and offers are higher there too.

Hope this helps!

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

I have a 10 year old Asus Vivobook (X200CA). This has intel core i3, 500 GB HDD, 4GB soldered onboard RAM and was serving as a replacement for my old desktop with my old 32 inch LED tv, keyboard, mouse and printer connected to it. Since the laptop is connected to the power all the time, after 10 years, the battery stopped giving any backup. Checked online and came across different options of "Compatible" batteries ranging from Rs.1.4k and "Original" batteries ranging from Rs. 3.2k plus.
Took the risk and ordered the "compatible" battery from an online site in India. Delivery was in 3 days and installed it after watching videos on Youtube. This one is of lower Wh than the original and gives close to 1.3 hrs backup. To me this is ok since the laptop is at a fixed location and not moved around.

Also ordered a SATA SSD (500gb, Crucial MX500), which was available at 2.5k on amazon in the recent sale. Cloned the old HDD to this and installed this and upgraded the OS to windows 11. The laptop has become super fast now.

I made a mistake when opening it and reconnecting the touchpad FFC. The connector in the MB has broken and the cable is not tightly connecting the the MB, rendering the touchpad useless. However since I have an external mouse, this is ok for now. Will try to figure out how to repair this without too much cost.

But the costs of SSDs have crashed over the last year and upgrading older laptops has become much more economical now.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

In general (at least in Delhi), company showrooms offer the best price. They have new sealed machines and give company warranty.

The problem with both online and multibrand stores is that they may palm off older systems, and at times returns. Many a time some critical accessories are also replaced with local ones to reduce price.

That is why I always buy at the company retail outlet, or at the company site.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Hi, Need advice on SSD.

I have a 10 year old dell laptop (service tag 6NV42Z1) which I had got from US through a friend. The laptop has gotten very slow and takes ages to boot up. I think the hard drive might be giving up and switching to an SSD will make a big difference. Other than that, there is no issue with the laptop.

Is it worth spending money on this?

As per DELL website, the hard disk on my laptop is listed as below

PJGMP HD,750,S3,5.4,2.5,512E,500M-6G

Does this mean I need to buy a SATA3 SSD?

Any recommendations for good SSD either 500 GB or 1TB with in reasonable price?

Thanks a lot in advance

Check your main board, some older main board do have extra M.2 slot. If you have, you can get a smaller M.2 SSD which you can put as bootable with OS install and keep your old HDD for data.

If you don't have a M.2 slot, the best shot is to go for a SATA SSD. Though the slowest of SSDs, still pack a good punch over those old HDD. I would suggest a small SSD (125 /256 GB) just to hold the OS. Your old HDD can be used as an external drive with a HDD case for your data. Considering a old system, a smaller OS ssd would load much faser than a BIG FAT SATA SSD. You never mentioned other config, such as RAM size and type etc. Considering a old system, please check the max RAM you can upgrade of the type and frequency.

This is what I did to my 2013 Acer laptop, increased the RAM to 8 GB (max possible with the board) and put a 256 SATA ssd with OS. Kept the old 1 TB WD hdd with a hdd case which hold all data. With 6K ish upgrade cost, laptop flew with flying color. Again, recently dumped the Windows 10 (can't be upgraded to 11) to Ubuntu. I can say, my 10 year old laptop with 2nd gen i3 has more grunt than many newer Chromebook.

For SATA ssd, you can try Crucial / Samsung /WD. Go for the better deal as all will perform similarly. Though I find software and support of Crucial to be slightly better than Samsung / WD.
